Çandır between Kaunos and Nature Trails
Accommodation in Çandır
Çandır combines ancient history with varied landscapes: Kaunos lies within the village boundaries, and the Çandır Ecotourism Area includes trails through red pine forests, maquis, and wetland ecosystems. The area also offers insights into the history of the harbour and has an officially recognised organic village designation. Çandır therefore offers a range of starting points for planning a trip—from cultural interests to outdoor activities.
Kaunos and its rock tombs
The ancient city of Kaunos lies on the western bank of the Dalyan River, also known as the Calbis, opposite Dalyan and within the boundaries of Çandır. Its rock tombs are a distinctive feature: arranged in seven groups to the southwest, they number 167 in total. The most significant group has tomb facades designed to resemble temple fronts. These features give the site a distinctive cultural and historical dimension, setting it apart from the hiking and cycling routes in the surrounding area.
The acropolis is also part of the Kaunos landscape: it sits on a hill 152 metres high. On a terrace with the Temple of Demeter, the Thesmophoria festival played an important role. It was a fertility festival celebrated by the women of Kaunos.
Hiking and cycling routes in the Ecotourism Area
The Çandır Ecotourism Area extends across the settlements of Çandır, Ekincik, and Sultaniye. It includes a designated 35,466-metre hiking route and a 54,642-metre cycling route. The two routes offer different ways to include outdoor activity in your trip: one is designated for hiking and the other for cycling. The hiking route passes through red pine forests, maquis, and wetland ecosystems—three different landscape types along the way.
If you plan to focus more on hiking than cycling during your stay, the route through these landscapes is a useful point of reference. Conversely, the designated cycling route provides a specific distance for anyone who would like to explore the area by bike. The route lengths alone do not indicate a particular walking or cycling time, but they do make clear that the area has routes for both hiking and cycling, which can help you choose the focus of your holiday.
The harbour, the delta, and local produce
The history of Kaunos harbour tells a story of a changing landscape: over time, alluvium carried by the surrounding waterways blocked the harbour, turning it into a lake. From the former shipyard harbour in the village, it is a 15-minute walk to Çandır village square. This route information connects a historic site with a specific destination in the village without requiring a longer journey.
From the heights above Çandır harbour, you can see the entire Dalyan Delta, İztuzu Beach, and Kaunos from above. Excursion boats moored at Çandır pier serve yachts that anchor at İztuzu Beach. The boats take yacht passengers to Dalyan and the mud baths.
Çandır was officially designated an organic village through an agreement with a certification body as part of the “Çandır Organik Köy Projesi” (Çandır Organic Village Project). Annual production includes 120 tonnes of olive oil, 700 tonnes of citrus fruit, 300 tonnes of pomegranates, and 116 tonnes of honey; there are also 6,851 bee colonies. Agricultural produce and the organic village designation are therefore also part of the character of the area.
When choosing a holiday apartment in Çandır, your preferred focus can help you decide: Kaunos and its history, the designated hiking and cycling routes, or the landscape of the Dalyan Delta.
