Discover Aliağa: Coast, Parks and Culture
Accommodation in Aliağa
Aliağa combines coastal spots and green spaces with cultural attractions, historical traces and hiking trails. In the city centre, Ağapark has a beach awarded the Blue Flag. There are also parks and facilities for sport and culture. When choosing where to stay, you can consider which aspects of Aliağa you want to shape your trip: beach days, outdoor excursions, culture or activity on longer trails.
Beach and open spaces
Ağapark has an 850-metre-long sandy beach. Its other facilities include a children’s water pool, playgrounds, picnic areas, sports grounds, green spaces and communal areas for relaxing. The combination of a beach and different open spaces gives families several ways to spend time together outdoors. If the beach is a priority when planning your holiday, you can consider these facilities an important part of your stay in Aliağa.
Avcı Ramadan is also a coastal recreational area in Aliağa. It has children’s play equipment and green spaces, as well as a harbour for recreational fishing. Concert and event areas add to what it offers. This means Aliağa offers different kinds of coastal experiences: the beach and facilities at Ağapark, and the green spaces and event areas at Avcı Ramadan.
Parks and activities for different interests
Yeni Mahalle KentPark is a 110-decare social recreation park in Aliağa, completed in 2019. Its facilities include a 330-metre children’s railway, a large children’s playground and a traffic education area. There are also sports areas, a picnic area, a cycle path and a mini-amphitheatre. Visitors with children will find specific play and leisure activities here; the cycle path and sports areas also cater to other interests.
Aliağa Spor ve Yaşam Merkezi brings sports and cultural activities together in one place. It includes a semi-Olympic swimming pool, karate and wrestling halls, and outdoor facilities for football, basketball and archery. There is also a library, Pilates and dance rooms, a folk dance hall, a children’s workshop and a small amphitheatre. When planning your holiday, you can decide whether to focus on exercise, cultural activities or things to do with children.
Culture, history and local discoveries
Since 2014, Aliağa Sanat Evi (ASEV) has offered courses in culture, art and practical skills. Its courses are open to residents of all ages. The open-air theatre in Zeytinli Park hosts theatre and film screenings, as well as other stage performances; ASEV’s end-of-year events are also held there. Eski Emir Alem Camisi is one of the settlement’s significant historic religious buildings. Alongside its coastal and recreational areas, these places give Aliağa a cultural and historical side.
The history of today’s city centre includes the village of Kilise Pınarı, which was home to Romanian farmers. Its church is today’s Aliağa Merkez Camii. From the early 19th century onwards, the village’s name came to be used as the general name for the Aliağa Çiftliği estate. The area’s ancient history is also worth exploring: in Aliağa district, Myrina was founded as an important port city on the shore of the Gulf of Çandarlı, also known as Elaitikos. It lay between Kyme, Akhaion Limen and Gryneion.
The Saturday Halk Pazarı offers a local culinary discovery. It sells wild herbs with medicinal properties that are also used as aromatic ingredients in food. The market thus brings together regional plants and their use in cooking.
Hiking trails and getting there
If you’d like to explore Aliağa on foot, you can add a hiking route to your itinerary that starts in Aliağa and heads towards the ancient city of Aigai via Yeni Şakran and Kapukaya. It includes an 11-kilometre hiking section as far as Köseler. Another route in Aliağa district runs from Karakuzu to Uçansu Waterfall via Yayla Mevkii, İbrahim Değirmeni and Yassıbelen Gediği. A different, explicitly challenging route also starts from Karakuzu and passes through Tembel Kuyusu, Şahin Deresi Kayalığı and Karadere Ağılları. It includes abseiling sections and a picnic break; these details help distinguish it from the other route.
