Ihlara Valley
Accommodation in Ihlara Valley
Ihlara Valley combines a striking landscape shaped by the Melendiz River with trekking and early Christian history. For planning your trip, routes of 4, 7 and 14 kilometres are available, along with monasteries and churches carved into the rock. This lets you consider whether your stay should focus on activity along the river, cultural discoveries or views across the valley.
Trekking along the Melendiz River
The trekking routes in Ihlara Valley are 4, 7 and 14 kilometres long and run alongside the Melendiz River. The different lengths help you fit your preferred distance into your day’s plans, without implying a particular walking time or level of difficulty. One of the routes begins in the village of Ihlara. Trekking is possible in the valley at any time of year. If you are planning a trip with your family, you can decide together which route length best suits your planned outing.
The valley begins in Ihlara and stretches through Belisırma and Yaprakhisar to Selime. This sequence describes the valley’s extent across several villages; it does not correspond to a specific trekking route. Ihlara Valley was shaped by a volcanic layer, natural forces and erosion by the Melendiz River. The river is therefore not only part of the landscape but also a reference point for the trekking routes described here.
Rock churches and history
Since the early years of Christianity, Ihlara Valley has been considered an important religious centre. One specific example is Sümbüllü Church in Ihlara: its monastic areas are carved into the rock on two levels. The church is on the left side of the valley, about 20 metres above the river level. The frescoes date from the 10th to the 12th century. Its architecture, location and paintings offer different points of interest if you are interested in the valley’s religious history and rock-cut architecture.
Ağaçaltı Church is also a useful landmark in the valley: when descending from the start of the valley, this is the first church you come to. If you are exploring the churches of Ihlara Valley, you can use this detail to orient yourself to their order on the descent. Together with the rock-cut areas of Sümbüllü Church, it shows how religious history here is told not only through individual names but also through distinctive architectural forms.
Panoramic views from Cam Teras
The Cam Teras observation platform was built 150 metres above Ihlara Valley and offers sweeping views across the valley. When it opened in 2024, the Cam Teras project included a cafeteria, a walking path, photo spots, a car park, a prayer room and toilets. The site thus combines views of the landscape with the other features included in the project at its opening. If you want to focus your trip mainly on views and scenery, Cam Teras is a notable landmark to consider when choosing what to experience.
When looking for a holiday apartment, you can first decide which aspects of the destination interest you most: the trekking routes along the Melendiz River, the history of the rock churches or the views from Cam Teras. If you are travelling together, you can also discuss which of these experiences to include in your plans.
