Aksaray offers several distinct ways to explore its history: Seljuk and medieval buildings, ancient settlements, and a museum in a former flour mill. There is also a pond shore with recreational areas and fish restaurants. When planning a trip, you can prioritize these themes according to your interests—from architecture and archaeology to regional history and landscape.

Architecture and Urban History

The Zinciriye Madrasa was built in 1336 by Yahşi Bey of the Karamanoğulları dynasty. As a madrasa, it has four iwans and an open courtyard. This layout makes the school’s architecture a subject in its own right: alongside the courtyard, the four iwans define its structure. The Eğri Minare offers a different historical landmark. The Seljuk structure was built by I. Gıyaseddin Keyhüsrev between 1221 and 1236. It is 30.6 meters high and has 92 steps.

The Debbağlar Bridge also dates from the Seljuk period and is assigned to the 12th century. Aksaray History Street brings works from four historical periods together side by side, about 50 meters apart.

Ancient Settlements: Nora and Acemhöyük

The ancient city of Nora lies at the foot of Mount Hasan. Its settlement dates back to the Hellenistic period, and Nora was also an important strategic military center. Ruins from the Roman and Byzantine periods are also part of the site. Together with the ruins, 32 church buildings and 20 cisterns have been discovered across the 200-hectare site. These figures convey the scale of the surviving or discovered remains without reducing Nora to a single period.

Another archaeological highlight is Acemhöyük in Yeşilova Beldesi, in the central district of Aksaray. The ancient settlement is one of the largest in Central Anatolia. If you are interested in settlement history, you can include Nora and Acemhöyük in your itinerary as distinct historical subjects: Nora’s documented traces span from the Hellenistic period through the Roman and Byzantine periods, while Acemhöyük is notable for its importance as a large ancient settlement.

Industrial History and Special Sites

The Azm-i-Milli Flour Mill was founded in Aksaray in 1924 at the request of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and is considered Turkey’s first flour mill. Today, the former mill is used as an industrial and science museum; its machinery is still operational. The site thus combines a specific founding story with its present-day use as a museum. The Paşa Hamamı is another notable historic institution: it is the only Turkish bath in the city center of Aksaray that remains operational to this day.

Helvadere Pond and Travel Interests

There are recreational areas along the shore of Helvadere Pond. There are also fish restaurants offering a variety of dishes. A stay by the pond thus complements Aksaray’s historical attractions with a different kind of travel experience. If you are traveling with people who have different interests, you can choose between architecture, ancient history, industrial history, and the experience of the lakeshore when planning your trip.

When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to first consider which of these aspects of Aksaray you want to shape your trip. This gives your choice of location a focus without presuming that particular accommodation is available or close to individual attractions.
