On the slopes of 2,150-metre-high Nemrut Dağı, the tomb of Commagene King Antiochos I and monumental statues lie in the area around Kâhta. This combination of mountainous landscapes and ancient history alone gives a stay in Kahta a clear theme. At the same time, there are other places nearby where you can discover different aspects of the Kingdom of Commagene.

Commagene history and structures in the surrounding area

Arsameia lies between the villages of Kocahisar and Damlacık, east of the Kâhta Çayı, also known as the Nymphaios. The site was the summer administrative centre of the Kingdom of Commagene. The Cendere Bridge spans the Cendere Çayı (Cabinas) between the districts of Kâhta and Sincik. It has two arches and was built by the XVI Legion, stationed in Samsat, during the reign of Roman Emperor Septimius Severus; the bridge is still in use. This means that various traces of the past stand side by side in the area: an ancient administrative complex, a royal tomb with monumental statues and a Roman bridge that is still in use.

The Karakuş Tumulus is also located on the road to Nemrut Dağı and is designated as an entry point to Nemrut Dağı National Park. Near Kocahisar, there is a castle with water cisterns, a hammam and a mosque. Other notable features include a hidden water channel leading to the Kâhta Çayı and a tower where carrier pigeons were bred. These details make a visit to the site an encounter with different aspects of its historic structures.

Plan for different times of day and your journey

You can watch the sunrise and sunset at Nemrut Dağı. Kâhta is a starting point for visits at sunset. When choosing a holiday apartment in Kahta, you can therefore first consider whether the monuments and cultural sites, a visit to Nemrut Dağı or other excursions will be the focus of your stay.

Adıyaman Airport is 15 km from Kâhta and can be used to travel to Kâhta. A ferry regularly operates across the Euphrates between Kâhta and Siverek. If you plan to use the ferry, it is advisable to check the timetable before travelling.

Local culture and regional cuisine

The Ebusadık Tomb in Kâhta is a local cultural landmark and is often visited by residents of the district. The city’s cultural identity also includes the recognition of singer Kahtalı Mıçe: he is honoured as a cultural ambassador, and his songs carried the stories, joy and sorrow of this region throughout Turkey.

In 2026, a commemorative programme was held on the anniversary of Kahtalı Mıçe’s death. After the Mevlid and prayers at Kahta-Çağrı Mosque, the programme continued with an event in the hall at the Kahtalı Mıçe Cultural Centre.

The landscape of Kâhta district also offers a different focus from the historic sites. Değirmen Başı is a recreation area in the river valley, 1 km from the village of Kocahisar. It is accessible via an unpaved road. Water flows between the rocks, and the area also has trees, green spaces and historic sites. Fish dishes and grilled dishes are served on the shore of the district’s reservoir. Those who want to include nature and regional cuisine in their travel plans will find a distinct area of interest here alongside the Commagene sites.

Getting your bearings in Kâhta

Kâhta’s official tourist information office is located at No. 33 Ahmet Aydın Street, Karşıyaka Mahallesi. The official district library is also in Karşıyaka Mahallesi, on the same street at No. 87. The Kâhta city guide offers information on addresses and plots, event announcements, photo galleries and external links for the district. These resources can be helpful when finding your way around town and planning visits.

When searching for a holiday apartment, you can use your itinerary to help you decide: a stay focused on the monuments and history of Commagene will differ from one centred on the river valley, the reservoir or the ferry connection. This lets you choose accommodation based on the experiences you actually plan to include.
