In Adıyaman Merkez, different historical periods meet: the ancient city of Perre, a Syriac church and several mosques each tell their own stories. There is also a traditional market and excursions from Adıyaman into the wider surrounding region. Whether you are mainly interested in archaeological traces or religious buildings, the different sites can give your trip a variety of focuses.

Perre and traces of antiquity

Perre Antik Kenti is located in the Örenli, or Pirin, neighbourhood of Adıyaman Merkez and was one of the five major ancient cities of the Kingdom of Commagene. Rock-cut burial chambers, cisterns and wine presses reveal different aspects of ancient life. Other surviving remains include Byzantine wall structures and uncovered mosaic floors from the 5th century BC. Perre has the largest necropolis area in the region. The variety of remains makes the site particularly interesting if you enjoy exploring archaeological traces in all their diversity.

Perre also has a Roman well whose water is still used. Check local conditions before visiting. This pairs information about the well’s use with the practical advice to check locally.

Churches and mosques in Adıyaman Merkez

The listed Church of St. Peter and St. Paul stands in the Mara neighbourhood. An inscription from 1905 records a repair carried out at the time, showing that the building already existed before then. Today, the Syriac Orthodox community uses the church for worship. The history of the building is therefore linked to its religious use by the community.

The mosques also preserve different historical clues. An inscription on the upper eastern part of the minaret base of Ulu Camii gives 1863 as the year the mosque took its present form. According to its endowment deed, Çarşı Camii in the city centre was built by Hacı Abdulgani in 1550. Eskisaray Camii in the Eskisaray neighbourhood dates back to 1148 in the Hijri calendar and is attributed to İbrahim Paşa.

Further dates add to this picture: according to its inscription, Kab Camii was built in 1768 and rebuilt by Hacı Mehmet Ali in 1923. Yenipınar Camii in the Yenipınar neighbourhood was built by Hacı Mahmut in 1720, according to the inscription on its minaret base. Comparing the dates for the present form, construction and rebuilding helps distinguish the building histories of the individual mosques.

Excursions in the wider surrounding region

A long Nemrut tour starts in Adıyaman at 02:00 and goes to watch the sunrise at Nemrut Dağı, as well as to Arsameia, Yeni Kale, Cendere Bridge and the Karakuş Tumulus. It lasts around five to six hours. Nemrut Dağı is a Late Hellenistic temple tomb with a 50-metre-high burial mound, three terraces and five large seated limestone statues. Check with the provider in advance to make sure the departure time and itinerary suit your plans.

Arsameia is also in the wider surrounding region: the site was the summer administrative centre of the Kingdom of Commagene and lies between the villages of Kocahisar and Damlacık, east of the Kahta Çayı, also known as the Nymphaios. The Karakuş Tumulus is an Anıt mezar built by Mithridates II for his mother, İsias. It is located in the protected area of the national park, which is designated as an access point to Nemrut Dağı. These stops add to the picture of the region’s history without conflating destinations within Adıyaman Merkez with longer excursions.

Gölbaşı Gölleri Nature Park offers a different focus on the landscape in the wider surrounding region. It includes the freshwater lakes Gölbaşı, Azaplı and İnekli, which together form a wetland ecosystem. This allows you to consider historic sites and the lake landscape as different themes when planning your trip.

Crafts, cuisine and local traditions

The historic Oturakçı Pazarı in the city centre offers regional handicrafts such as carpets, kilims and Cicim-Heyben, as well as tourist souvenirs. The market complements visits to historic sites with a glimpse of local crafts.

Across the wider travel area, Çiğ Köfte, İçli Köfte, Basalla, Cılbır and Mercimekli Köfte are among Adıyaman’s best-known dishes. There are restaurants serving regional cuisine in the provincial centre; individual businesses may change. Hıtap is a type of pide made only in Adıyaman: it is filled with roasted meat, onions, parsley and Pul Biber, then baked in a stone oven.

Harfane refers to a musical gathering tradition passed down in Adıyaman. The elements described include conversations about current topics, songs, folk songs, Manis and ghazals, as well as various games; food and drinks are served too. The tradition offers another cultural perspective on the wider travel area.

Choose accommodation to suit your trip
