Douliu offers several distinct ways to experience a stay: nature at Squirrel Forest Park, red-brick architecture along Taiping Road and religious history at Zhenyi Temple. If you are looking for a holiday rental, you can use these themes to guide your trip planning rather than reducing Douliu to a single focus. This gives you a view of the city that takes ecological, architectural and religious interests into account side by side.

Nature and Urban History

Squirrel Forest Park is part of the Yunlin Creek Arts and Cultural Belt and is known for its diverse ecology. It adds a natural focus to the historical and religious themes. If you are planning a family trip, you can therefore consider early on whether ecological diversity is one of the interests you want to take into account when choosing activities. This connection with nature gives your Douliu plans a different focus from exploring façades, inscriptions or religious traditions.

Red Brick and Historic Architectural Styles

Taiping Road is a clear example of Douliu’s urban history. Following the urban renewal carried out in Douliu in 1927, residents built numerous brick buildings there with exposed red-brick walls. Family names and decorative motifs are also engraved on the walls and exterior surfaces of many buildings on Taiping Old Street. When looking at them, note the difference between the red-brick surfaces and the individual engravings: you will see both a recurring building material and personal and decorative details in the streetscape.

Douliu House of Citizen-Memorial Hall of Attendance was built around 1927 in connection with Crown Prince Hirohito of Japan’s visit to Taiwan. Local dignitary Wu Keming and others collected donations for its construction. The two-storey, Japanese-influenced brick building has an asymmetrical, linear façade, load-bearing brick walls and a wooden roof structure. The architectural details offer three ways to understand it: its exterior form, wall construction and roof structure. This allows the building to be understood not only in terms of its age, but also its construction.

Temples and Agricultural Themes

Zhenyi Temple is the oldest surviving temple in Douliu. Its decorations, including carvings and paintings, as well as the wooden structures of the front and rear halls, are largely well preserved. The temple is also a ritual site where the Longhua and Xiantiandao schools of Zhaijiao come together. While the Memorial Hall’s construction date and design are the main focus, Zhenyi Temple combines preserved decorative features with a religious function.

Douliu also has an agricultural connection: the luffa-growing area is in Sankuang Village and covers more than 60 hectares. This adds a distinct agricultural perspective to the themes of nature, architecture and religious tradition. When looking for a holiday rental in Douliu, it helps to decide first whether you want your stay to focus more on nature, architecture, religion or an agricultural theme.
