Najran brings together archaeological history, traditional markets and distinctive regional cuisine. In the administrative capital, the Najran Valley divides the urban area into a northern and a southern part. Other destinations include the archaeological city of Al-Okhdood, museums and historic Raoum Castle. So, when planning your trip, it helps to ask a simple question: would you mainly like to discover history and culture, or explore regional specialities and markets as well?

Najran and Getting Around the Region

Najran Regional Airport is located in the administrative capital and serves all the region’s governorates. It is directly accessible via King Abdulaziz Road; from Najran City, the journey takes about 30 minutes. This is a useful landmark when looking for a holiday apartment in Najran and planning your arrival. The Najran Valley divides the capital into two parts, north and south of the valley. The subregions of Najran and Sharorah provide further ways to orient yourself in the region.

Al-Okhdood and the History of the Region

Al-Okhdood City, also known as Raqamat or Rijmat, is an archaeological city and tourist destination in the Najran region. The Al-Okhdood citadel is believed to have existed from 500 BC until the middle of the 1st century AD. A notable find came to light during an excavation in 2018: the so-called Najran Treasure, a clay vessel containing more than 2,850 silver coins. The coins had lain underground for around two millennia. Anyone interested in archaeology will find several distinct points of interest here: the history of the citadel and the discovery of the coin hoard itself.

The museums also each have their own focus. Najran Regional Museum was built in 1983 and opened to visitors in 1987. It is located in Najran City, near the Al-Okhdood archaeological site. Its prehistoric wing covers the period from after the Stone Age to the end of the pre-Islamic era, with a particular focus on Al-Okhdood and the artefacts found there. Najran Museum of Heritage and Antiquities has six exhibition halls, including a “Live Saudi” hall and a hall for visual presentations. Najran Regional Museum has five exhibition halls. These differing figures refer to the museums named respectively.

Fortress, Landmark and Markets

Raoum Castle is a historic fortress on Raoum Mountain, in the centre of Al-Hudn village in Najran City, near Prince Sultan Road. It can be reached via a staircase and is visited by people interested in archaeology and by mountain climbers. Its described location and access therefore set it apart from the museums and exhibition venues. Najran Dam is considered a prominent urban landmark and an important tourist attraction in the region.

The historic Aba al-Saud quarter is home to traditional and historic markets. They offer daggers and janbiyas typical of Najran, as well as leather goods, textiles and items made from stone and ceramics. Making janbiya daggers is a traditional craft in the region. The daggers are made of iron, with handles fashioned from the horns of certain animals; they are often decorated with silver or gold elements. Najran’s traditional women’s market is reserved exclusively for women. Popular products, household goods and clothing for women are sold there.

Regional Cuisine and Different Interests

Hamisa is a popular Najran dish made with finely diced meat and fat. Both are braised in oil for about an hour, stirring constantly, and served with rice or baked goods. Raqsh is another main dish of the region: pieces of wholemeal bread are covered with broth and meat. It is also served at public gatherings, especially during Ramadan. These dishes give your trip a culinary focus that differs from visits to archaeological sites and museums.

When choosing a holiday apartment in Najran, you can tailor your search to the experiences that matter most to you: Al-Okhdood and the museums for archaeological history, markets and crafts for regional traditions, or the cuisine for Najran’s well-known dishes. The destinations and interests described here offer different themes for your stay, without limiting your trip to just one side of the region.
