Guiuan lies on the Pacific side and combines coastal scenery with distinctive natural and historical features. Its many white-sand beaches, Linao Cave in Sulangan, and the islands of Suluan and Homonhon each represent a different facet of the area. The Guiuan Marine Reserve also includes designated coastal areas, islands and reefs. When planning a trip, you can start by asking whether beaches and surfing, a natural pool, or the history of particular islands is of greatest interest to you. These priorities can also guide your search for a holiday rental: what matters is which themes and named places are important to your stay.

Coast, Surfing and Linao Cave

Guiuan is a coastal town on the Pacific side, with many white-sand beaches suited to swimming and surfing. You can surf at ABCD Beach on Calicoan. This puts a broad coastal landscape alongside a named surfing spot. When planning your trip, you can decide whether the coast in general or a specific surfing location is especially important. If swimming and surfing are among your interests, you can take both into account when choosing where to go.

Linao Cave offers a different focus from the coast. It is located in Sulangan, Guiuan, Eastern Samar, and is a natural pool of fresh, cold, blue water. “Linao” means “clear” in Waray-waray and describes the cave’s fresh water. The name thus evokes not only the water’s colour and temperature, but also a connection to the Waray-waray language. If you want to include a specific natural water formation in your trip planning alongside beaches, Linao Cave offers a distinct focus.

Guiuan Marine Reserve

The Guiuan Marine Reserve is designated as a Protected Landscape/Seascape under Proclamation No. 469. Its area includes the coastal areas of Guiuan, the neighbouring islands of Manicani, Candulo, Suluan, Tubabao, Calicoan and Homonhon, as well as the surrounding reefs. The designation thus encompasses coastline, several islands and reefs. It offers a broader geographical perspective than individual named places such as Linao Cave. Nature enthusiasts can therefore consider both specific natural formations and a designated landscape and seascape in Guiuan.

Two Islands, Two Historical Events

Homonhon and Suluan represent different chapters in Guiuan’s history. Ferdinand Magellan’s expedition to the Spice Islands landed on Homonhon on 17 March 1521. In 1944, American forces landed on Suluan and fought their first battle on Philippine territory there, three days before General MacArthur’s landing on the beaches of Leyte. The islands are not interchangeable: Homonhon is associated with the 1521 expedition, Suluan with the 1944 battle; Leyte provides the timing reference for this later event. This distinction helps put Guiuan’s individual historical reference points into context.

Choose a Holiday Rental Based on Your Travel Interests

When looking for a holiday rental in Guiuan, it helps to first identify what you want your trip to focus on. Should beaches and swimming take centre stage, would you like to surf at ABCD Beach, are you interested in Linao Cave, or would you like to explore the historical events associated with Homonhon and Suluan? If your group has different interests, you can agree on priorities together before searching and use them to assess which location suits your plans.
