You can get to know Hutan Melintang through specific local stories: its mosques tell of construction, endowment and relocation, while the Sungai Bernam features in the history of earlier boat connections. Together, these themes give your trip a cultural and historical focus. The details can be arranged by their time references: a specific construction date, a relocation and the river’s former use.

Mosques: Construction, Relocation and Endowment

Masjid Jamek Pekan Hutan Melintang was built on 25 June 1953. By contrast, the story of Masjid Hutan Melintang centres on its relocation: it was originally in Kampung Teluk village on the banks of the Sungai Bernam. It was demolished at its original site, then moved to its current location and enlarged there. The river is therefore part of the story of its former site; the relocation and expansion tell of the building’s later development. This allows two different historical aspects to be compared: a precise construction date on the one hand, and relocation and expansion on the other. The comparison shows that local history can be traced to a single date as well as to a series of changes.

Another story connects Masjid Kampung Kota with its proximity to the river. Raja Kahar/Raja Long and his family endowed the land as a waqf. The mosque is about 30 metres from the Sungai Bernam and was built for the local community as well as for people from outside it. This shifts the focus from the building’s chronology to the land’s endowment and the intended community. Compared with the story of the relocated mosque, this one concerns the land and the purpose of the building. You can explore the difference with children by asking simple questions: Who endowed the land, who was the mosque intended for, and which building was moved?

The Sungai Bernam and Former Jetties

The Sungai Bernam is also part of the history of earlier boat connections. There was a jetty on the riverbank near Masjid Kampung Kota, from which residents travelled to their homes as well as to Sabak Bernam and Teluk Intan. Until the early 1970s, the Hutan Melintang jetty was a busy departure point for passenger boat trips across the Sungai Bernam to Sungai Air Tawar and Parit Baharu in Selangor. A 2016 report located the jetty on the banks of the Sungai Bernam in Hutan Melintang, about four kilometres from the town of Simpang Empat in Hutan Melintang. At the time, it described the former passenger jetty as having been completely converted into a fishing jetty, where fishing boats docked and unloaded their catch. Two details are important for the timeline: passenger trips continued until the early 1970s, and the 2016 report described its conversion into a fishing jetty.

Local History as a Travel Interest

When looking for a holiday rental, you can use these differences as a thematic guide: are you primarily interested in the history of religious sites—with their construction dates, endowments and relocations—or in the earlier changes to boat connections? Hutan Melintang offers two distinct cultural perspectives to help guide your choice of destination.
