Gerik: Discover Waterfalls, Fishing and Nature
Accommodation in Gerik
The area around Gerik offers nature destinations with a variety of attractions: multi-tiered waterfalls, river landscapes, fishing, picnicking and a range of recreational activities. When looking for a holiday rental in Gerik, it’s worth first deciding what you’d like to do on your outings: are waterfalls, a hike or a wider range of activities your priority? Each of the following places has its own focus.
Waterfalls, River and Picnics
Lata Kulim Waterfall has seven tiers and is about 15 km from Gerik. Visitors can fish at Lata Kulim; the tengas is one of the fish species found there. Forest flowers and butterflies in a variety of patterns and colours are also part of the area’s natural landscape. This makes waterfalls, fishing and nature-watching available in one place.
Sungai Kala offers a different landscape: it is divided into three sections, each with several waterfall tiers. Together with Lata Kulim’s seven tiers, this offers a useful comparison of two waterscapes: here, the river’s three sections are distinctive, while there, the waterfall’s tiered form stands out. If the landscape itself matters to you when planning your trip, these descriptions offer different perspectives on the water around Gerik.
Lata Tanjung Kala lies at the foot of Bukit Kala in the Hutan Simpan Bintang Hijau forest reserve. The route to the foot of the waterfall is a leisurely hike of about 30 minutes through village areas and rubber plantations; the final section follows a forest road. Here, the route itself is part of the experience.
Lata Ulu Lawin is a picnic area about 27 km from Gerik and 1 km from the small town of Lawin. So, alongside waterfall trails and river landscapes, there is also a designated picnic spot, with two points of reference for its location.
Fishing, Recreation and Local Traditions
Activities at Denai Kabus include fishing, swimming in the pool, camping, horse riding, kayaking, ATV riding and flying fox. At Lata Kulim, fishing complements the waterfall and nature-watching; Denai Kabus, by contrast, offers a wider range of activities. This can help you weigh up different priorities when planning your outings.
Information from the Forestry Department dated 21 July 2022 gives the distance to Taman Eko-Rimba Pulau Tali Kail as 14 km from Gerik via Jeti Empangan Temenggor. Visitors can hire a boat at the jetty. Check the current boat arrangements before planning your visit.
Ulu Rui is about 30 minutes from Gerik via the Gerik-Kupang Expressway. This travel time adds a driving reference point to the distances given for the nature destinations.
A festival for catching Ikan Loma is held at Dataran Kuala Rui.
Consider your outing plans when choosing a holiday rental
When looking for a holiday rental in Gerik, the distances offer a first point of reference: Lata Kulim is about 15 km away, Taman Eko-Rimba Pulau Tali Kail is 14 km from Gerik via Jeti Empangan Temenggor, and Lata Ulu Lawin is about 27 km away. Lata Kulim and the Taman are therefore a similar distance from Gerik, while Lata Ulu Lawin is farther away. Consider whether waterfalls and fishing, a visit to Taman Eko-Rimba or a picnic area will play a bigger part in your plans. This lets you choose where to stay based on the experiences that matter to you.
