In Koganei, parkland, spring water and cultural history come together. The distribution of large parks, a distinctive escarpment and trails with different characteristics offer several ways to tailor your stay to your interests.

Parks, Springs and a Distinctive Landscape

Koganei City has three large metropolitan parks: Koganei Park is in the north, while Nogawa Park and Musashino Park are in the south. This north–south distribution offers a general orientation within the municipality. The cherry blossom garden in Koganei Park covers about 2.9 hectares and has around 400 cherry trees. If you plan your visit around the blossom season, check the seasonal conditions before you go. More than 40 bird species have also been recorded in the same park; birdwatching is possible there year-round, although sightings may vary.

Sōrōsen-en offers a different natural setting: this protected green space was designated a green-space conservation area in 1977 and is managed by Koganei City. Admission is charged. Birds can be heard year-round around the spring-fed pond, and ducks and other birds also visit. Sōrōsen-en, Nukui Shrine and the Bijutsu-no-Mori green space at today’s Koganei City Hakenomori Art Museum were selected as three of Tokyo’s important springs in the “Tokyo no Meiyūsui” selection.

The terrain is also distinctive: the Kokubunji Escarpment, called Hake in Koganei City, runs east to west between the higher northern plateau and the lower southern plateau. The difference in elevation is about 15 metres, and groundwater emerges along the escarpment. Hake-no-Komichi runs by the Hakenomori Art Museum. There is a spring in the adjoining Bijutsu-no-Mori, and the surrounding area offers diverse natural scenery.

Activities and Trails

Bicycles for adults and children, ranging from 12 to 27 inches, are available for hire at Koganei Park. The park also has a dedicated cycling path and a practice area for young children. Barbecues are permitted on the spacious lawn at Yūkari Plaza. The park therefore offers a range of activities, from cycling to barbecuing. Check the latest rental and reservation details before making plans.

The cultural and historical walking tour of Koganei City is divided into five routes: along the Tamagawa Aqueduct, the Sengawa, Renjaku Street, the Yakushi Path and Hake-no-Michi. This path name was chosen in a public competition in 1973 for the trail below the escarpment. Hake-no-Michi runs from the area in front of Konzō-in towards Nimai-bashi. As trail conditions may change, check them before setting out.

Cultural History and Traditions

Yokuonkan was built in 1930 as a training centre for youth group leaders and now houses Koganei’s Cultural Property Centre. Yokuonkan and Kūrin-sō are jointly designated as a municipal historic site. The Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum also has buildings that are several centuries old. Hake-no-Komichi runs by the Hakenomori Art Museum; views of the landscape and architecture nearby bring together different cultural and natural themes.

Among the traditional performing arts is Edo string puppetry, a distinctive form of Japanese puppetry: the figures are deftly operated using more than ten strings, and Yūki-za in particular carries on the tradition. Koganei-bayashi was re-established in 1974 after the tradition had been interrupted for a time following the war. The Hayama-Funabashi style was continued under the guidance of Musashino-bayashi. This history complements the architectural and landscape features with living traditions, without implying a current performance schedule.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Koganei, the difference in what each place offers is a useful starting point: Koganei Park combines various activities with nature observation, while Sōrōsen-en highlights its spring-fed pond and protected green space. Think about what you would like to shape your days, then focus your search on a suitable location.
