Ishigaki combines striking landscapes with a rich island history and a distinctive food culture. Kabira Bay lies in the northwest of the island, is a major tourist destination and is one of Japan’s 100 Landscapes. It is also known for black pearl cultivation. Those interested in nature and scenery will find a different setting in the expansive Banna Park, located in the centre of the island and surrounded by subtropical nature.

Discover the Landscape and Cultural Heritage
Historic buildings also tell stories of different chapters in the region’s history. Tōrin-ji was founded in 1614 by King Shō Nei; Kango Seidō was appointed its founding priest. The temple is considered the oldest in the Yaeyama Islands. Nio statues stand at the entrance and are regarded as the oldest surviving wooden sculptures in Okinawa Prefecture. This makes the site notable both for its regional temple history and its distinctive place in art history.
Miyara Donchi is a preserved residence dating from the Ryūkyū Kingdom period. Built in 1819 on the model of a samurai estate, it was designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Its history also includes repeated interventions: the Ryūkyū government ordered its demolition five times. In 1874, the building was given a thatched roof; in 1899, it was given a tiled roof again. These dates give a concrete picture of the building’s history without limiting the preserved residence to a single period.
Yaeyama Traditions and Collections
The regional cultural landscape includes the Pūrī of the four villages of Ishigaki Island. It was selected as an intangible folk cultural property on 26 November 1993, and measures to document it are planned. Another cultural expression is Angama, an Obon custom observed only on Ishigaki Island. In it, dancers follow Nmi and Ushumai, visit homes and perform stories, songs and dances. The two examples represent different aspects of regional culture: a cultural property selection with a specific date and a custom with defined characters and performance forms.
The Yaeyama Museum displays archaeological and historical materials, handicrafts and everyday objects from the Yaeyama Islands. It also features equipment used in agriculture and fishing. Harbour Cuisine, Shopping Street and Textile Craft
At the Euglena Ishigaki Port Ferry Terminal, travellers can pick up supplies before continuing to other islands. The terminal has souvenir shops, a pharmacy, and shops selling marine leisure goods and accessories. Small eateries in the terminal serve Yaeyama soba, tuna bowls and taco rice. Individual shops and menus may change. The covered Euglena Mall shopping street also has a history linked to food and trade: a fish market was established there during the Meiji period, later becoming Ishigaki’s public market.
Textile craft can also be a distinct focus for a trip. Visitor information for the Azamiya Main Store Minsa Craft Museum, updated on 18 June 2025, mentions a look at part of the production process and free entry to the textile exhibition room. The listed weaving courses range from about 20 minutes to approximately three hours. This range can help you compare the time needed for a brief introduction with that of a longer course.
