In Okinawa, you’ll encounter Ryūkyū history, coastal experiences, and the nature of Yanbaru in a variety of ways. Ginoza, the east coast, and the region’s landscapes offer different points of connection for your trip.

Ryūkyū History Across the Island

The sites and associated monuments of the Kingdom of Ryūkyū represent 500 years of Ryūkyūan history, from the 12th to the 17th century. Its nine components are spread across the island of Okinawa: two stone monuments, five castles, and two cultural landscapes, covering a total of 54.9 hectares. This history takes different forms—from stone monuments and castles to cultural landscapes located throughout the island.

Yanbaru: Forests, Mountains, and Water

A large part of Yanbaru is protected within Yambaru National Park, which covers around 174 square kilometers. Yanbaru’s subtropical evergreen forests, mangroves, and limestone mountains provide a habitat for rare plants and animals, including the endemic Okinawa rail. If you’d like to experience the landscape on foot, you can hike through the forest in Yanbaru to Hiji Waterfall.

As another destination in southern Okinawa, Okinawa World lets visitors explore 890 meters of Gyokusendō Cave. These offer two different nature experiences: a walk through the forest to a waterfall and an exploration of a section of cave. Both give you a concrete reason to experience the landscape not just as a backdrop, but as part of your travel itinerary.

Ginoza Between the East Coast and Yanbaru

The town of Ginoza is on the east coast, in the central part of Okinawa. It serves as a gateway to Yanbaru Nature Park and is about an hour’s drive from Naha. If you’re looking for a vacation rental and considering the east coast and access to Yanbaru, Ginoza may be worth considering as a location. The approximate drive time also provides a reference for planning by car.

The Ginoza Roadside Station is on National Route 329 in coastal Kanna, near the border with the city of Kin. Its tourist information center provides information about sights in Ginoza and the wider Yanbaru region. English-language assistance is also regularly available there. This gives you a place to get information about both Ginoza and the wider natural area.

Activities on Two Wheels and by the Water

A guided bicycle tour lasts three hours and takes you through Ginoza’s townscapes, as well as the history and culture of the municipality. Two and a half hours of the tour are spent cycling. The total duration and cycling time give you two concrete points of reference if you’d like to include the tour in your day’s plans.

You can swim at Hīpī Beach; camping is possible there with prior application. You can also watch the sunrise typical of the east coast from the beach. Ginoza Roadside Station has an indoor play area and an outdoor area with a water playground and a playground. So, in addition to cycling and the beach, Ginoza offers a range of play areas.

Cuisine and Tradition in Ginoza

Ginoza soba is made with noodles produced from Jaga-men, a local specialty. The Ginoza Sweet Shop sells locally made cakes, desserts, and soft-serve ice cream. On the second floor of the roadside station, Farm Lab serves freshly prepared burgers and coffee with a view of the sea. The options bring together a local noodle specialty, sweet treats, and savory dishes.

The Hachigatsu Ashibi harvest festival is also part of local culture. In the historic districts of Matsuda, Ginoza, Sōkei, and Kanna, the festival and tug-of-war competitions take place on the 15th day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar. The tradition is thus tied to a specific date in the lunar calendar and several districts of the municipality.
