Nara: World Heritage, Nature and City History
Accommodation in Nara
Nara combines UNESCO World Heritage with striking landscapes and a historic cityscape. Nara Park offers room to explore at your own pace, the Kasugayama Primeval Forest preserves a distinctive cultural landscape, and machiya townhouses shape the character of the Naramachi district. Which of these aspects you would most like to discover may also influence your choice of starting point for your trip.
World Heritage Between Temples and Cultural Landscape
The UNESCO World Heritage Site Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara is located in the modern city of Nara and comprises eight component sites. Together, these places make up a single World Heritage Site: Yakushi-ji was inscribed as one of its component sites in 1998. Gangō-ji is represented by two special buildings: Gokurakudō and Zen-shitsu are National Treasure buildings that were rebuilt during the Kamakura period. Anyone interested in Nara will find concrete points of reference here for both the World Heritage sites and the history of the architecture.
The Kasugayama Primeval Forest reveals another side of the World Heritage Site. It is an associative cultural landscape and part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara. It is preserved as a sacred forest; hunting and tree felling have been prohibited there since 841. This long history of protection is as much a part of the forest’s character as its landscape: it lies east of Nara, covers about 250 hectares and reaches an elevation of 498 meters. The approximate area and elevation offer a sense of the scale of this natural environment.
Different Experiences in the Park and Mountains
Nara Park is a 511.52-hectare park in the center of Nara. It has no designated entrance gate: visitors can enter freely and move around the park as they please. This makes a visit different from going to a destination with a single designated entrance. You can therefore make the park a focus of your trip if you would like to include open paths and time in green surroundings in your plans.
Mount Wakakusayama also offers its own distinctive landscape. It is 342 meters high, covers 33 hectares and is covered in grass. The Kasugayama Primeval Forest, in turn, is defined by its location to the east, its size and its history as a sacred forest.
Getting to the Park and Wakakusayama
The stations offer different starting points for Nara Park: it is about an eight-minute walk from Kintetsu Nara Station. From JR Nara Station, the walk takes about 20 minutes; alternatively, the bus ride takes about ten minutes. These details can help you weigh how to get to Nara against your preferred way of reaching the park, without treating the walking and bus routes as equivalent.
You can also plan the journey to Wakakusayama in two stages: buses from JR Nara Station and Kintetsu Nara Station reach the foot of the mountain. From the Higashidaibutsu-den・Kasuga-taisha-mae or Kasuga-taisha Omotesando stops, it is then about a 15-minute walk. If you plan to include the mountain in your trip, allow for both the bus ride and the walk that follows. When looking for a holiday apartment, it may be helpful to first decide which of these starting points and experiences matter most for your trip.
City History and a Summer Lantern Festival
In Naramachi, the machiya townhouses preserve the character of the Edo and Meiji periods. The district adds an urban perspective to the landscape and World Heritage themes: the focus here is on traditional house types and the historic character of the townhouses. If you would like to bring together different interests on a trip to Nara, you can consider this cityscape as a focus in its own right, alongside the park, mountain and World Heritage sites.
Nara Tōkae is an annual summer event. During the event, numerous candles are lit in Nara Park. This recurring annual occasion differs from enduring features such as the parkland, historic buildings and machiya townhouses. For trip planning, it is therefore helpful to think of the event as a summer activity, while the other themes mentioned characterize Nara regardless of the time of year.
