Natural forest, changing views across two seas, and customs that shape the year: Tatsugo brings together different sides of Amami. In the Amami Natural Forest, established paths lead through a Class I protected zone of Amami Gunto National Park. Along the coast, bays and distinctive tidal spots invite you to combine views of the water with beach or diving experiences. Which of these aspects interests you most can help guide your choice of vacation rental in Tatsugo.

Natural Forest, Views and Tides

On the extensive grounds of the Amami Natural Forest, you can observe native plants, birds and insects. The seasons also change what you can discover there: Hikan cherry blossoms appear in January and February, and fireflies in summer. If you’d like to combine nature watching with expansive views, Dragon Fort is the highest lookout in the natural forest. From there, the 360-degree panoramic view stretches across emerald-green Tatsugo Bay; in good weather, you can also see Mount Yuwandake and Kikai Island.

Kaseken Pass offers a different view: from this lookout, you can see both the East China Sea and the Pacific Ocean at the same time. These are two distinct perspectives on the surrounding seascape—the sweeping view across the bay from Dragon Fort and the view of both seas from the pass.

On the coast east of the settlement of Akaogi lies Heart Rock, a heart-shaped tidal pool that is visible only at low tide. However, it is not always visible: since around May 2025, strong winds have often covered it with sand, even when the water level is low. The best viewing conditions are when the sea is calm and the water level is below 80 cm, approximately one hour before or after low tide. If you plan to visit, the water level, tide timing and sea conditions are important factors—but there is no guarantee the rock will be uncovered.

Bays, Beaches and Diving

Akaogi Bay, also known as Amami Crater, is a shallow swimming area and is known for one of Tatsugo’s major bathing beaches, with particularly beautiful sand. This offers a different focus for your vacation planning than the paths and viewpoints in the natural forest: here, the water and beach take center stage.

The diving experiences also vary. The inner bays have diverse underwater topography and abundant marine life, and usually have very little current. These spots are also suitable for beginners and trial dives. In the open sea, you can expect clear water and dynamic underwater formations, and encounters with larger marine animals are possible. If you’re planning your trip together, these differences can help you decide whether to focus on sheltered bays or open-water areas.

Customs, Cuisine and Local Flavors

In Akina, Shochogama is celebrated: at dawn, drums are played and prayers are offered for the health of young people and a good harvest. A thatched structure is then shaken until it collapses. Taneoroshi, meanwhile, takes place in Tatsugo’s settlements at the end of the year. Participants go from house to house, dancing as part of a ritual purification and praying for a good harvest the following year and for prosperity. Hirasemankai combines drumming and antiphonal singing with prayers for a good harvest, followed by an August dance on the beach. These customs have different focal points—from dawn in Akina to dancing on the beach in August.

For a meal, the restaurant at Hamachidori-kan serves local dishes such as Keihan chicken rice and a pork-bone set meal, as well as Japanese, Western and Chinese cuisine. Tatsugo is also home to three distilleries that make brown sugar shochu using local spring water. Distillery visits are possible if arranged in advance. If you’d like to explore local cuisine and production as well as nature and the sea, these options can help you decide which experiences you want to shape your stay.
