Kamikawa: Waterfall, Mountain Forest and Coastal Art
Accommodation in Kamikawa
Explore Kamikawa through two distinct natural settings: at Kamikawa-Ōtaki Park, the waterfall and changing mountain landscapes shape the experience; at Kamikawa Beach, sand, coastal views and shadow art take center stage. This variety can help you plan your trip: first consider whether you’d rather spend your time among forests and water, or along the coast and with its artworks.
Waterfall and Mountain Landscape at Kamikawa-Ōtaki Park
Kamikawa-Ōtaki Waterfall is located in Kamikawa-Ōtaki Park and is 25 meters high and 30 meters wide. These measurements give the waterfall a tangible scale without reducing it to a single figure: its height and width both contribute to its distinctive appearance. The same park is home to a suspension bridge that is 68 meters high and 130 meters long. Its dimensions create a different impression from those of the waterfall: the bridge combines height and length, while the waterfall combines height and width.
The water itself also tells a story about the landscape. Clear water from the Hangashizuru Gorge flows between steep rock walls toward Kamikawa-Ōtaki Waterfall. The park’s mountain landscapes change throughout the year, and the area is also well suited to forest bathing. Nature lovers will find more than a single viewpoint here: the waterfall, rock walls and seasonal mountain scenery offer different ways to shape a day’s itinerary.
Meals are served at the Ōtaki Teahouse in the park. The food on offer and opening hours may change; check the latest information before your visit if needed. This makes it possible to plan a visit to the park around both its natural features and a meal on site.
Sandy Beach, Views and Shadow Art
A sandy beach stretches along the Kamikawa Campground. From there, you can see Sakurajima and Kaimondake, also known as Satsuma Fuji. The campground is open year-round. The coast offers a different focus for your trip: here, the beach and the two named views take precedence over the waterfall and mountain landscape.
Shadow art installations stand permanently along the coast at Kamikawa Beach, with motifs that change according to the season. The art therefore takes on a different visual emphasis as the seasons change. The shadow art also offers a distinctive connection to the place for photography: shadows created by the setting sun make for special photos.
A walking path leads from the Kamikawa Campground to a fishing spot on the rocky coast. The beach and rocky stretch of coast appeal to different interests: those who want to focus on coastal art or the views will have different priorities from those interested in fishing.
Choose the Right Location for Your Trip
If waterfalls, mountain landscapes and forest bathing are your main interests, you’ll want to plan differently than you would for a stay focused on the beach, coastal views and shadow art. When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Kamikawa, it’s therefore worth comparing the property’s specific location with the places that matter most to you.
