Kanoya Among Roses, Landscapes and History
Accommodation in Kanoya
Kanoya brings together gardens and parkland, archaeological finds and collections on regional history. The natural side of the city is especially tangible at Kanoya Rose Garden and the adjoining Kirishima-ga-Oka Park; museums add a range of historical perspectives.
Roses and rolling parkland
Kanoya Rose Garden borders Kirishima-ga-Oka Park. The garden cultivates 100 varieties of roses and 6,500 rose bushes. Roses can be enjoyed there in spring and autumn; cut flowers are on display year-round, although the selection of blooms may vary. Seasonal rose blossoms are thus complemented by a floral display that is not limited to these two seasons.
Kirishima-ga-Oka Park lies at an elevation of about 160 meters in gently rolling terrain. From the observation tower, you can see Kinkō Bay, Sakurajima and Mount Kaimon. Depending on the season, flowers such as sunflowers, cosmos and tulips bloom there. The park also has a campground and a cycling path; children can enjoy play equipment and go-karts.
For planning purposes, there is a clear seasonal distinction: roses are especially prominent in spring and autumn, while the park’s flowers change with the seasons. Cut flowers, which can be enjoyed year-round, add to the selection. The garden and park thus bring together different floral and landscape themes without tying every experience to the same season.
Archaeology and regional history
The Oji Ruins Museum displays about 200 exhibits. These include remains of buildings with load-bearing ridge posts, pit dwellings, pottery, stone tools and iron objects. A particularly striking exhibit is the remains of a building with load-bearing ridge posts and a gabled roof, considered the first fully preserved find of its kind from Japan’s Yayoi period. The collection therefore ranges from building remains to everyday objects.
Kanoya Railway Museum presents the history of the former Japanese National Railways Ōsumi Line. Until it was discontinued in 1987, the line served the residents of the Ōsumi region as a means of transport. The Kanoya City Rail Memorial Center is located on the former site of Kanoya Station and displays more than 400 items used on the Ōsumi Line. These include fare boards, signals and track maintenance tools.
Kanoya Air Base Museum displays an aircraft of the type 零式艦上戦闘機五二型. Its historical materials cover topics ranging from the beginnings of the Imperial Japanese Navy to World War II, as well as the present-day Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. The three collections offer different perspectives: archaeological finds, the history of a discontinued railway line and materials on naval history.

A city brochure also presents designated cultural properties, offering another way to explore the city’s cultural history.
