Wakkanai: Capes, Wildlife and Views
Accommodation in Wakkanai
Wakkanai reveals itself through distinctive capes, wildlife and places with very different character. ノシャップ岬 is the westernmost point of the city and juts out into the Soya Strait. From there, you can see the islands of Rishiri and Rebun; the cape is also known for its sunsets. Another viewpoint is 宗谷岬: on a clear day, you can see Sakhalin from there, more than 40 kilometres away. The two capes offer different highlights for planning your trip—one with views of Rishiri and Rebun, the other with the possibility of a distant view of Sakhalin.
Wildlife and Park Golf
ノシャップ寒流水族館 houses and displays around 1,300 specimens from 120 species, mostly from northern regions. One of its special features is a circular-current tank with a capacity of 90 tonnes. It is home to Ito, rockfish, flounder, Hokke and wolf fish. The figures and the species listed give the aquarium a distinctive profile: its focus is on numerous specimens from mostly northern species, complemented by the variety in the large circular-current tank. If you are travelling with children, you can include this focus on observing wildlife as part of your exploration of Wakkanai; other interests may lead you to the capes, a walking trail or park golf.
北海道立宗谷ふれあい公園 has a park golf course recognised by the Japan Park Golf Association. It has 36 holes across four courses, and clubs are available to rent. This makes park golf a separate activity to include in your travel plans: the facility offers several courses, while the option to rent clubs may be relevant when deciding what equipment you need. This option is quite different from a day focused on views, wildlife or history.
History, Poetry and Views
Buildings also offer distinctive points of interest when choosing accommodation for a trip to Wakkanai. 稚内港北防波堤ドーム was built between 1931 and 1936. If you would like to include a historical element in your exploration of the city alongside its natural attractions, this is a building with a clearly defined construction period.
開基百年記念塔 at 北方記念館 in Wakkanai Park is 80 metres tall; the lower floors house 北方記念館. The glazed observation hall of 北方記念館・開基百年記念塔 is 70 metres above the ground. On a clear day, it offers views of Wakkanai’s urban area, Rishiri, Rebun and Sakhalin. The observation deck and museum are located in the same building, but are different reasons to visit: the hall offers views of the surrounding area, while 北方記念館 is on the lower floors.
The walking trail 短歌の道 adds a literary touch. It runs from 北門神社 to 氷雪の門, with memorial stones bearing poems along the route. This lets you include poetry and memorial sites in your exploration of Wakkanai, alongside its scenery and buildings. When choosing a holiday apartment or house, what matters most is which of these different interests you want to shape your trip.
