Mombetsu combines ice-sea experiences with play, wildlife observation and regional history. Okhotsk Sea Ice Park includes a family-friendly play area; in Mombetsu, a museum and railway archive also tell stories of the development of fisheries, everyday life and the former Shokotsu Line. Coastal plants and glimpses of the underwater world round out the themes for your trip.

Play and the Ice Sea

Area B of Okhotsk Sea Ice Park includes the family-friendly “Sea and Land Playground.” The play equipment mentioned there includes a large wave slide, “Jump Mountain” and a combination play structure in the style of a pit dwelling. Their varied forms add a distinctive touch alongside the maritime experiences. Facilities and seasonal opening periods may change, so check the hours before your visit.

As of September 13, 2026, the icebreaker Garinko operates under the name Garinko III IMERU; operating details may change. The Ocean Exchange Center is its berth and also offers a free shuttle bus to Okhotsk Tower. If you plan to include the icebreaker in your itinerary, check the latest operating information beforehand.

Observe the Sea

In Mombetsu, Okhotsk Tower is known as the world’s first ice-sea observation tower. Its underwater viewing windows let you observe fish from the Sea of Okhotsk at close range. This underwater perspective complements the destination’s other marine attractions with a direct look at life beneath the surface.

The Okhotsk Tokkari Center offers a different nature-focused experience: it is home to more than 20 seals and returns rehabilitated animals to the Sea of Okhotsk. When planning your trip, you can choose between different highlights—from observations in the tower to learning about the animals’ rehabilitation and return to the sea.

Local History and Coastal Landscape

The Mombetsu Municipal Museum presents topics such as the development of fisheries, everyday life, agriculture, forestry and mineral resources. “Mombetsu Story” traces local history from the Paleolithic period to the present. Its broad range of topics connects different aspects of life in Mombetsu across a long historical span.

The Ueshokushibetsu Railway Archive Room displays timetables, uniforms, lamps and a railway catcher from the era of the former Shokotsu Line. Unlike the museum, with its wide range of topics, the archive focuses on one particular historic railway line. Those exploring local history can distinguish between a broad overview and a specific railway theme.

In Mombetsu, Omusaro Primeval Flower Garden stretches northwest of the urban area, beyond the Shokotsu River, for approximately one kilometer along the coast. Around 50 species of native flowering plants grow there; their visibility naturally varies by season. The garden therefore offers a landscape-focused experience distinct from the play, museum and marine attractions.

When looking for a holiday rental in Mombetsu, let your travel interests guide your choice: play activities, marine and wildlife observation, coastal plants or local history each offer a different focus. Choose accommodation to suit the mix of experiences that matters to you on your trip.
