Discover Chiba
Accommodation in Chiba
Chiba can be explored with a range of interests in mind: the Chiba City Science Museum offers a planetarium, hands-on experiences, and a model of the deep-sea research submersible Shinkai 6500. The Chiba City History Museum introduces the history of the area, while a New Year’s visit to Chiba Shrine offers a special seasonal occasion. When looking for a holiday rental in Chiba, consider whether science and hands-on discovery, city history, or a visit at the start of the year should shape your trip.
Science to see and experience
At the Chiba City Science Museum, the planetarium is designed as a full-dome theater. It has an inner diameter of 23 meters and 200 seats. In 2025, the planetarium was upgraded with new projectors and peripheral equipment. This makes more realistic, detailed starry skies and images possible. Visitors interested in looking at the sky will find a clear focus here, while the technical details also give a sense of the scale of the space.
The museum’s other areas each have their own focus. Wonder Town, on the eighth floor, invites visitors to explore their own perception through hands-on experiences involving optical illusions. On the ninth floor, Techno Town displays a scale model of the deep-sea research submersible Shinkai 6500. The playful exploration of perception and a model from deep-sea research therefore sit side by side as distinct themes.
The Chiba City Museum of Art also has a studio for children. Designed by artists, the space lets children create together and make their own works. For families who would like to include a creative activity in their trip as well as looking at art, this is a distinct reason to consider visiting the art museum.
Traces of history and views across Chiba
The Chiba City History Museum stands on the site of the ruins of Inohana Castle. Its exterior resembles a castle, and it is also known as Chiba Castle. From the viewing areas on the first through fifth floors, visitors can see across the city and Chiba Port. The site thus combines an engagement with history with views of the city and port.
Another historical point of interest is Inohana Park. The historic park is located at the place where Chiba originated. In 1126, Tsuneshige, the father of Chiba Tsunetane, built his residence there. The specific year and family connection make the site a point of reference for anyone wishing to learn more about Chiba’s early history. The museum and park offer different ways to explore the past: the former through its castle-like appearance and viewing areas, the latter as the site where the residence was established.
New Year visits and local information
At Chiba Shrine, the New Year visit begins at midnight on January 1 with drumming. More than 650,000 worshippers visit during the first three days of the year. These details give the start of the year a clear place in trip planning and distinguish a shrine visit from the museum and history themes available throughout the year.
A different kind of story is associated with a pine tree in Hagoromo Park. It is linked to the Hagoromo Legend, according to which a celestial maiden is said to have hung her robe there. The traditional story gives the tree its own cultural significance without requiring a lengthy historical overview.
The Chiba City Tourist Information Center is located in front of Chiba Station. There, you can find information about walks around the station, dining, and souvenirs. If you would first like to get your bearings around the station, the center offers information on these topics. The walks described are in the area around the station.
Choose the right focus for your trip
Chiba offers several distinct interests for a trip: the Science Museum focuses on the planetarium, perception, and deep-sea research; the art museum adds opportunities for children to create their own work. You can explore history in different ways at the Chiba City History Museum and Inohana Park, while a shrine visit is especially associated with the start of the year. You can therefore choose a holiday rental based in part on which of these interests matters most to your trip.
