Coastal views, culture and outdoor activities offer different ways to shape your trip around Asahi City. The Pacific Ocean lookout, short walks through green spaces, a disaster preparedness museum and a Kagura performance appeal to a range of interests. When choosing a vacation rental, it may therefore help to first consider which experiences you want to define your trip.

Coastal panorama at Cape Gyōbu

The Iōka Gyōbu-misaki “Hikari to Kaze” lookout stands on a cliff about 60 meters high at the western end of Byōbugaura. From the “Hikari to Kaze Deck” on the third floor, you can see the Pacific Ocean and the long, curving coastline of Kujūkuri. The ocean and coast are therefore both in view, rather than the panorama focusing on a single landscape feature.

The view from Cape Gyōbu has been included in several lists: “Japan’s 100 Best Sunrises,” “Japan’s 100 Best Sunsets,” “Japan Night View Heritage,” “Japan’s 100 Best Night Views,” “Kantō Region’s 100 Best Views of Mount Fuji,” and “Chiba’s 100 Best Viewpoints.” These categories range from the light at the edges of the day to night views and vistas of Mount Fuji.

To reach the lookout, take a Chiba Kōtsū bus bound for Chōshi from Asahi Station on the JR Sōbu Main Line. The ride to Tōdai-iriguchi takes about 30 minutes. From there, it is about a 10-minute walk to the lookout. Check local connections before your trip.

Walks, sports and play

Two routes are available for a walk, each described differently. The “Cultural Forest Park and Multipurpose Field” route passes through Cultural Forest Park next to City Hall; one loop is 650 meters long. At Asahi Sports Forest Park, a 600-meter circular route runs around the lawn. The routes there are not purpose-built walking paths. The routes differ in both length and setting: one is in a park next to City Hall, while the other goes around the lawn of a sports park.

Asahi Sports Forest Park has a sports hall, tennis courts, a baseball field and a lawn. The tennis courts and baseball field must be reserved. Ohisama Terrace has an indoor play area with slides and tunnels, reserved for children up to and including sixth grade. This specific age limit is worth considering when planning an outing together.

Remembrance and traditional culture

Asahi City’s Disaster Preparedness Museum opened on July 19, 2014, to preserve the memory of the Tōhoku earthquake, which severely affected Asahi City, and to share knowledge about disaster preparedness. Photographs, videos, objects and documents cover the earthquake and tsunami disaster, as well as the journey from the day of the disaster through to reconstruction. The focus is therefore not only on the event, but also on what followed.

Since 2024, the Kamakazu Kagura performance has been scheduled for the weekend days at the end of March. The program includes the traditional dances Sarutahiko, Uzume, Okame, Takemikazuchi, Hachiman, Sanbō Kōjin, Sakakiba, Tanokami, Uke-mochi, Tanemaki, Taitsuri and Izumo-giri, as well as children’s performances of the Heisoku and fan dances. A procession takes place around 11 a.m.; after noon, Kagura is performed in a Kagura hall. If you would like to include the performance in your travel plans, check the current event dates in advance.

Forest and a steam locomotive

Ryūfukuji Forest is a natural woodland of Sudajii, Tabunoki and Yabutsubaki trees. It has been preserved through the veneration of Senryūzan Ryūfukuji and the efforts of successive chief priests. The forest thus combines a specific description of its tree species with a traditional form of preservation.

A steam locomotive is on display at Chūō Jidō Yūen playground. As a distinct, easily recognizable object, it offers a different point of interest from the coastal panorama, forest and museum exhibits.
