In the municipality of Yuzawa, scenic park landscapes meet a rich festival tradition. From the viewpoint in Maemori Park, you can see Mount Chōkai and the Ogachi Plain; at Atago Shrine, a Daimyo procession is part of the annual festival held in September. This offers two distinct focuses for planning a trip: landscapes and seasonal nature on the one hand, and festival culture on the other.

Parks with views and blossoms

Maemori Park is set on hilly terrain. From the viewpoint, you can see Mount Chōkai and the Ogachi Plain, bringing the mountain and the open plain together in one landscape. About 200 Yoshino cherry trees grow in the park. During the cherry blossom festival, visitors can enjoy the illuminated blossoms in the evening.

After the cherry blossoms have faded, azaleas, irises, hydrangeas and other flowers can be seen there. The park’s seasonal focus changes: first, cherry blossoms define the scene, followed by a variety of other flowers. If there is a particular flower you would like to see, you can plan your visit around this sequence.

Atago Park offers a different focus. It is known for its cherry blossoms and is used for nature and bird watching; its grounds adjoin the Atago Shrine precinct. Here, two interests come together: observing nature and birds, and the shrine’s festival tradition. By contrast, Maemori Park combines scenic views with a succession of different flowers.

Festival traditions at Atago Shrine

Atago Shrine stands on Mount Atago. According to tradition, its founding is associated with Sakanoue no Tamuramaro in the Heian period. The annual festival in September includes the Daimyo procession, which is considered a tradition more than 300 years old and is one of Yuzawa’s three major festivals.

The historical references tell two different stories: the Heian period is part of the shrine’s founding tradition, while the reference to more than 300 years relates to the procession. This allows you to distinguish the story of the shrine’s origins from the history of the festival custom.

Getting around and planning your trip

Maemori Park is a 20-minute walk from JR Yuzawa Station and a three-minute drive from the Yuzawa Interchange. Atago Shrine is a 30-minute walk from Yuzawa Station; toilets and parking are available. The walk from the station to Maemori Park is therefore ten minutes shorter. Travel times may vary depending on route conditions; check the route before your visit.

When looking for a holiday rental in Yuzawa, it helps to decide on your trip’s main focus first: seasonal flowers at Maemori Park, nature and bird watching at Atago Park, or the Daimyo procession. For families with different interests, this provides a concrete starting point for discussion, as nature watching and festival culture offer different experiences.
