Semboku: Discover Lake Tazawa and Kakunodate
Accommodation in Semboku
The municipality of Semboku offers two very different travel experiences: Lake Tazawa, with its deep blue water, and Kakunodate, with its historic townscape. The lake brings together scenic landscapes and seasonal water activities; Kakunodate offers a cultural contrast with traditional architecture and Kabazaiku craftsmanship. Nature experiences and culture thus stand side by side as distinct highlights.
Lake Tazawa: A Landscape That Changes with the Seasons
At 423.4 meters deep, Lake Tazawa is the deepest lake in Japan. Its intensely blue water is surrounded by lush green mountain forests, which are reflected on the surface on calm days. The lake is considered a symbol of Semboku. The combination of water, forested slopes, and reflections creates a striking scenic experience whose appearance changes with the seasons.
Cherry trees bloom along the shore in spring; in autumn, the leaves turn red and orange, while in winter, deep white snow blankets the area. Pedal boats and paddleboarding are available on Lake Tazawa from spring through autumn. Shirahama, a white sandy beach on the lake’s eastern shore, is open for swimming for several weeks in summer. The timeframes differ: swimming is limited to a specific period in summer, while both water activities are available from spring through autumn. Nature watching and getting out on the water can therefore take on different prominence depending on the season.
Kakunodate: Town History and Kabazaiku
Kakunodate’s historic townscape is designated as a Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. Kakunodate’s Yama Float Festival is on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list. The historic townscape and the festival form a cultural highlight distinct from the lakeside and water experiences.
In Kakunodate’s historic samurai district, the historic section of the Ishiguro Family Residence is open to the public year-round from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Only this section can be visited, as the family’s descendants still live in the house. Check the opening hours before your visit so your day’s plans fit the stated hours.
The Semboku City Kakunodate Kabazaiku Center has an exhibition room for Kabazaiku crafts and also offers demonstrations. A workshop lets you make a small Kabazaiku hanging plaque; reservations are required. The activities differ in format: the exhibition and demonstrations introduce the craft, while the workshop offers a hands-on activity.
Plan Your Experiences and Vacation Rental
When looking for a vacation rental, your preferred focus can help guide your choice: Would you like your stay to center on the lake and its seasonal nature and water experiences, or would you like to make time for Kakunodate’s town history and Kabazaiku? Consider the places you want to visit when choosing where to stay. For travel to the lake, a regular bus connects JR Tazawako Station with Lake Tazawa on the Tazawako Round Trip route. Check the timetable before setting out if you plan to use this connection.
