Hiking trails around Dishon
In the area around Dishon, the Israel National Trail runs west from Alma Bridge, between Alma and Dishon. A dirt road leads to the confluence of the Aviv and Dishon streams. This clearly defines the starting point, direction, and destination of this section; check current trail conditions before setting out.
A route suggestion from 2020 also starts at Alma Bridge, on Highway 886 southwest of Moshav Dishon. It leads to the Nahal Dishon parking area on Highway 899. A pickup vehicle is required for this route. Unlike the section of the Israel National Trail that ends at the confluence, this route makes the parking area the endpoint, so arranging the required pickup is an important part of planning. Check for current route information and conditions beforehand.
Streams and springs: different seasons, distinctive details
Near Dishon, Nahal Dishon has a small spring. The area features colorful spring blossoms; the stream flows in winter. The seasonal experiences are therefore quite different, and conditions can vary throughout the year. If you’d like to explore the natural surroundings, consider which of these seasonal features matters most for your visit when planning your trip.
Ein Dishon spring lies below Moshav Dishon in the Upper Galilee. A 2011 travel report describes an old pool with worked stones and stone arches above it, as well as clear, cold water. The description conveys both the pool’s architectural details and the character of the spring at that time. However, it does not provide information about current access; check whether a visit is possible before planning a trip specifically to see it.
Archaeological sites in the wider Northern District destination
Another area of interest in the wider Northern District destination is archaeology. Tel Hazor and Tel Megiddo are biblical tells with significant remains of cities linked to the Bible. They offer a different perspective on the region’s history, while the nature and tour information about Dishon appeals to other interests.
Tel Hazor preserves significant archaeological remains; visits focus on the Upper City. The site includes Solomon’s Gate, with six chambers and two towers dating to the 10th century BCE. The Canaanite palace was used by the kings of Hazor in the 14th and 13th centuries BCE. The Late Bronze Age palace is considered the most elaborate in Israel and one of the most important in the Levant. The fortifications are also notable: they are considered the finest example of their kind in the area extending from southern Turkey to the northern Negev.
Tel Hazor’s underground water collection system includes steps three meters wide, carved into the walls of a vertical shaft. The system is an example of sophisticated engineering adapted to the geography for storing water. The excavated shaft is 45 meters deep. Tel Hazor National Park can be reached from the north and south via Highway 90 toward Ayelet Hashahar; check your navigation before setting out.
Tel Megiddo is also in the Northern District. Its Early Bronze Age temple complex is considered exceptional for the number of its temples, the continuity of worship, and the documented ritual activities. From a different period, the orthogonal city plan from the Iron Age has few parallels in the Levant. This distinction between periods illustrates the unique character of the archaeological remains.
