West Papua – Coral Reefs, Traditions and History
Accommodation in West Papua
West Papua offers different ways to experience nature and culture: coral ecosystems shape the marine landscape in Cenderawasih Bay, while places such as Pulau Mansinam, Kokas and Namatota tell stories of history and local traditions. When planning your trip, it is worth first choosing the experiences that interest you most. The places mentioned are in different areas, and specific boat connections are described for some destinations.
Corals, Islands and Waterfalls
The marine area of Teluk Cenderawasih National Park covers approximately 1,385,300 hectares, including 80,000 hectares of coral reef ecosystems. The national park is in Kabupaten Teluk Wondama, Papua Barat. Cenderawasih Bay is home to approximately 200 coral species. These figures refer to the bay and the park’s marine area—two useful points of reference for anyone particularly interested in the underwater world.
The waters around Kaimana also have great biodiversity: approximately 937 fish species and 492 coral species live there. This is a distinct regional focus and should not be equated with the figures for Cenderawasih Bay.
One striking feature of the landscape is Air Terjun Kiti Kiti: the waterfall flows directly into the sea. Teluk Toran is in the Karas District, at the foot of Gunung Bay. Each of these places gives your trip planning a specific geographic reference; the boat routes described for reaching them differ.
History and Living Traditions
Museum Mansinam, also known as Museum Pekabaran Injil, is located on Pulau Mansinam. It is considered the first thematic museum in Papua Barat. The two names refer to the same museum. For culturally minded travellers, it offers a different thematic experience from natural areas and seascapes.
The Kokas archaeological site, also known as Tapurarang, is a historic place in Kabupaten Fakfak. Red handprints can be found on sea cliffs and in caves, and are estimated to be several thousand years old. This combination of tangible traces and a cautious estimate of their age makes Kokas a distinctive historical subject. If you are travelling with family, you can consider whether historic sites or wildlife and nature observation better match everyone’s interests.
In the waters around Kaimana, the Sasi Nggama tradition regulates the use of marine resources through opening and closure periods. In Desa Namatota, another cultural connection takes centre stage: the village is the centre of the Kingdom of Namatota, which has existed since around the 16th century and continues to be recognised. At the same time, Desa Namatota was designated one of Kabupaten Kaimana’s tourist villages by Regent’s Decree No. 430/82/VII/Year 2021 and is located in Taman Wisata Perairan, Area III.
Each year, the government of Kabupaten Teluk Wondama in Papua Barat organises the Roon Wondama Festival. It brings together local traditions and the local knowledge of the people of Roon Island with maritime tourism. The programme includes Bemamun Soren, described as a traditional sea battle. Exhibitions by local small businesses showcase traditional foods and handicrafts typical of Papua Barat. The festival therefore offers a distinct opportunity to explore regional traditions and products.
Places and Boat Connections to Consider When Planning
For Pulau Mansinam, the trip from Ketapang Pier by water taxi is listed as taking approximately 10 to 15 minutes; alternatively, you can hire a speedboat. Teluk Toran has a different set of arrival instructions: from the city centre, it can only be reached by speedboat or longboat. You can reach Air Terjun Kiti Kiti from Fakfak Harbour by speedboat in approximately four hours. These specific differences can help you decide which destinations to prioritise on your trip and where you would like to look for a holiday rental. The times and transport options given apply to the stated starting point and destination in each case.
Birdwatching offers another focus: Kampung Kwau is one of the places in the Pegunungan Arfak region known for birdwatching. In the Mokwam region, you can observe, among others, the Cenderawasih-parotia, Belah Rotan and the bowerbird.
