The Moluccas offer travel experiences ranging from coral reefs and the sea to rainforests and mountains, as well as places connected with the history of the spice trade and the Indonesian independence movement. Local traditions and specialties are also part of the experience. When choosing a holiday rental, it is therefore worth first considering which place and experiences you want to shape your stay.

Sea and Island Nature

Pantai Ora is located in Saleman village, in the North Seram District of Central Maluku Regency, Maluku Province. There, you can snorkel from the jetty above well-preserved coral reefs and watch small fish beneath the water’s surface. The underwater world makes Pantai Ora a good choice for travelers who want to spend time by the sea and snorkeling.

Exploring by boat, swimming and snorkeling are the main activities in the Pulau Bair area. Its landscape includes small island groups, rocky cliffs and clear seawater in shades of blue and green. The reefs of the Banda Islands, meanwhile, are home to more than 397 coral species and 683 fish species; there are also many turtles. These different natural attractions offer a reason to decide on your preferred focus before choosing a destination.

Those more interested in rainforest and mountains can consider Manusela National Park on Seram Island. It encompasses tropical rainforests and mountain ecosystems and provides a habitat for endemic animals such as the Seram cockatoo and bear cuscus. Hikers also visit the park to climb Gunung Binaiya, the highest peak in Maluku. A trip focused on nature is quite different from a stay centered on the sea.

On Buru Island, Danau Rana is its largest lake. Green hills and cooler air characterize the surrounding area; the lake is suited to nature tourism, photography and relaxation away from the crowds. This provides another distinct landscape to explore alongside the Moluccas’ seascapes and mountains.

History and Traditions

In Banda Neira, Benteng Belgica recalls the Dutch colonial period of the 17th century. The well-preserved pentagonal fortress is connected with the history of the spice trade, which once brought worldwide attention to Maluku. From the fort, visitors can see Gunung Api Banda and the surrounding blue sea. Also in Banda Neira, Rumah Pengasingan Sutan Sjahrir is a destination for history and educational tourism: it recalls Sutan Sjahrir’s exile and Banda Neira’s role as a place of exile for several figures in the Indonesian independence movement. Rumah Pengasingan Bung Hatta is connected with Bung Hatta’s exile and offers insight into his legacy in the struggle for independence.

In Ohoi Wulurat on the Kei Islands, Lutur Ko Yam Faak is a preserved prehistoric stone fortification and a testament to the former life and civilization of Kei society. Visitors can also see the Tarian Panah there. The traditional dance depicts the lives and struggles of the Kei people’s ancestors. Another local tradition is Toar Torman, in which betel nuts are set upright as part of welcoming guests. Those interested in history and living culture will find different reasons to visit here than at the natural attractions.

The traditional Kora-Kora boat race takes place every year on the Banda Islands. For the event, each village builds a traditional war boat according to old Bandanese practices and rituals. The race combines a public event with the craftsmanship involved in preparation and the villages’ inherited rituals.

Local Specialties and Choosing a Destination

Ikan Garam is available at traditional markets, fish-processing centers, souvenir shops and UMKM outlets in various regencies and cities across Maluku Province. In coastal areas, visitors can also buy the product directly from fishermen or fish-processing groups. Kue Kenari is available on the Banda Islands at souvenir shops, culinary centers and home-based businesses; some UMKM businesses in Ambon and other parts of Maluku also sell it.

When choosing a holiday rental, you can focus on the experiences that matter most to your trip: the sea and snorkeling, nature and hiking, island history, traditions or local specialties. For further guidance, visit the pages for Ambon, Ternate, Ambon City and Kei Kecil.
