Bondowoso: Ijen Landscape, Waterfalls and Culture
Accommodation in Bondowoso
Bondowoso combines striking natural scenery with insights into the region’s history: green hills, waterfalls and the Ijen Crater sit alongside a railway history museum and an information centre dedicated to megalithic heritage. Active experiences such as rafting and a paragliding launch site are also among the destination’s many facets. When choosing a holiday rental, it is therefore worth first considering which of these interests you want to shape your stay.
Green Hills and Waterfalls around Ijen
Kawah Wurung is in the village of Kalianyar in Ijen District. The landscape there is characterised by green hills and grassland. Kawah Wurung takes its name from a hollow between the hills that resembles a crater—even though there is no crater at this spot. This contrast makes the name easy to understand: the shape looks like a crater, but the landscape is a hollow among the hills. Travellers hoping to discover varied landforms will find a different kind of scenery here than at a waterfall or on the rim of Ijen Crater.
Also in Kalianyar village, in Ijen District, is Air Terjun Blawan. The waterfall is formed by sulphur-rich seepage from Ijen Crater and is surrounded by macadamia trees and moss. Another distinctive feature is visible at the outflow: the water flows directly into the ground. The combination of seepage, vegetation and the unusual disappearance of the water gives Blawan its own character. For a trip that includes nature observation, this is a different experience from the open hills of Kawah Wurung.
Air Terjun Tancak Kembar is in Bondowoso Regency, East Java, and consists of two waterfalls side by side. At Ijen Crater, meanwhile, visitors may witness a rare natural phenomenon: at sunrise, bluish flames known as Blue Fire may appear. The phenomenon usually occurs at around 5 a.m. Visitors can also walk along the crater rim for about 1 to 1.5 hours. This approximate duration helps you account for the walk as a separate part of your trip planning, distinct from a visit to the waterfalls.
Megalithic Heritage and Railway History
Bondowoso also has points of interest for travellers keen on history. Pusat Informasi Megalitikum Bondowoso, or PIMB for short, was established near the Pekauman megalithic site as an educational centre dedicated to Bondowoso’s megalithic heritage. It provides information about the site’s objects. Visitors can focus on the megalithic heritage and learn about the objects there. Museum Kereta Api Bondowoso is regarded as the first railway museum in East Java and adds a railway history theme to the cultural attractions.
Rafting, Paragliding and Coffee
Bosamba Rafting is another point of interest for planning an active trip. It is in Krocok village in Taman Krocok District, and the rafting route includes 23 rapids. Puncak Megasari is a mountainous area in Ijen District with a paragliding launch site. If you are interested in this activity, you can include the site when choosing places to visit.
Coffee is another regional highlight: Blawan Coffee Plantation is in Sempol District, Bondowoso Regency, on the slopes of Ijen, at approximately 900 to 1,200 metres above sea level. The altitude is approximate. For travellers interested in coffee cultivation, the plantation is a point of interest in its own right, alongside the natural and cultural attractions.
The locations of several attractions are clearly distinct: Air Terjun Blawan is in Kalianyar, Bosamba Rafting is in Krocok, and Blawan Coffee Plantation is in Sempol. If a particular experience is the deciding factor for you, include its location when searching for a holiday rental.
