Magelang combines nature experiences with museums, city history and Javanese traditions. At Gunung Tidar, you can wander through a pine forest or hike up the hill; its summit lies 503 metres above sea level. If you are interested in plants and their conservation, Kebun Raya Gunung Tidar offers another way to experience nature: it carries out work in plant conservation, research, education, tourism and environmental services.

Nature and activities

Taman Kyai Langgeng offers a distinctive experience. The grounds cover 27.5 hectares and are home to hundreds of rare plant collections. There is also a water park, fish spa, flying fox course, tandem bicycles and ATVs. The park also serves as a destination for religious tourism. This brings botanical collections and a range of leisure activities together in one destination—a different kind of nature and adventure outing from hiking at Gunung Tidar.

For an active day on the water, Progo Rafting offers white-water trips along the Progo River. The operator also offers fun games, a flying fox and paintball. If you are more interested in golf or events, visit Borobudur International Golf & Country Club: established in 1987, it offers a course described as a five-star golf course, as well as a hall available for hire for meetings and larger events.

Museums and city history

The museums cover a range of subjects. Oei Hong Djien Museum displays 1,500 works of art: paintings, sculptures, installations and ceramic crafts. At Museum Bumiputera 1912, you can learn about the history and development of the insurance industry in Indonesia. The building was constructed in the Javanese Central Javanese Joglo style.

Several exhibits and collections present military history. Museum Taruna Abdul Jalil displays weapons and equipment used for military training; it offers guided tours for tourists and has a souvenir shop for visitors. Museum Sudirman features replicas of Sudirman’s bedroom and living room, a table used to lay out the body of Panglima Besar Sudirman, as well as pictures and paintings of General Sudirman. Museum Panglima Besar Sudirman was established on 18 May 1967. At Museum BPK RI, visitors can learn about the BPK’s duties, authority and work.

A landmark in the cityscape is Titik Nol Kilometer Kota Magelang. Its marker consists of an old lantern monument bearing the inscription “Maart 1924 Electrificatie Magelang” and a post marked “MGL 0”. Historic buildings in the surrounding area include Klenteng Liong Hok Bio, the Grand Mosque, the water tower and GPIB Beth-El. The town square is a good place for a stroll or to take shelter.

Festivals, dance and local cuisine

Grebeg Gethuk is celebrated each year on the anniversary of Kota Magelang. The festival includes a procession with gethuk and field-crop gunungan from 17 kelurahan, the scrambling for the gunungan, the dance drama “Babad Mahardika” and other cultural performances. Grebeg Suro is also held annually in the area around Kebun Raya Gunung Tidar; it includes a traditional ritual at the summit of Gunung Tidar.

The city’s dances include Kuntulan, which depicts Diponegoro’s troops practising martial arts, and the Kepodang Mas dance. This welcoming dance depicts a pair of Kepodang birds in love. Klenteng Liong Hok Bio is a venue for traditions of the Chinese-Indonesian community, including Imlek celebrations with Barongsai performances. The temple was founded in 1864 and restored after a fire in 2014.

Kupat Tahu is one of the typical local dishes of Kota Magelang. Another local speciality is Gethuk Pojok Bu Endang, which has been available since the 1950s and is sold at Pasar Rejowinangun in Kota Magelang. Both names add a culinary connection to the city during your stay, without requiring you to plan a specific itinerary.

Plan a variety of discoveries

Kampung Jambon Gesikan is also a tourist destination in Kota Magelang. During the “Fun and Happy City Tour” held there, participants could directly observe and learn about the village’s climate-friendly and environmentally conscious management. Terminal Tipe A Tidar offers residents and tourists a tourism service that can be booked online through the terminal’s website.

When choosing a holiday apartment in Magelang, you can start by considering which experiences you would like to shape your trip: nature and activities, art and history museums, city traditions or local cuisine. These different themes offer practical starting points for planning your days around your interests. You can also add Borobudur to your travel plans as another destination.
