Batang Regency lies in the north of Central Java and connects Jakarta with Surabaya. Highlights for a trip include the hill-surrounded bay of Pantai Ujungnegoro, Batik Rifa'iyah, waterfalls and local traditions. The cuisine also has its own distinctive character. If you are looking for a holiday rental in Batang, you can choose your location based on the experiences that matter most to you: coastal scenery, nature, crafts or regional food.

Coast and nature around Batang

Pantai Ujungnegoro is in Kandeman District, about 14 kilometres northeast of Batang city. The bay is surrounded by hills. Below the cliff, a cave and coral rocks serve as a fishing area—a specific point of interest for anyone interested in fishing. The landscape and designated area give Ujungnegoro a different character from the waterfall destinations in the regency.

Curug Gombong consists of two waterfalls: Curug Lanang is above, and Curug Wadon below. A concrete staircase leads to both; the walk that follows takes about ten minutes. Curug Kanoman is seven metres high. Visitors can swim in the clear water beneath the waterfall. Together, these offer different nature experiences: two waterfalls with clearly described positions relative to each other, and a single waterfall where swimming is possible.

At Desa Wisata Besani, you can also combine nature with activities: visitors cycle among green tea plantations and can try traditional games such as Cublak-cublak Suweng, sack racing, Dakon and skipping. A visit to Desa Wisata Besani can also include Curug Dewi Besani as a natural attraction. Pandansari offers a different experience: at Pandansari River Tubing, visitors go tubing along an irrigation canal through rice fields. Visitors in Pandansari can also camp and take part in outdoor activities.

Pemandian Air Panas Sangubanyu is in Pesanggrahan village, Bawang District, about 50 kilometres south of the capital of Batang Regency. There, a warm spring emerges from rocks west of a river that forms the boundary between Batang Regency and Kendal Regency. This location adds a spring in a riverside border landscape to the coastal and waterfall experiences.

Batik Rifa'iyah and local traditions

In 2025, Indonesia's Ministry of Culture recognised Batik Rifa'iyah from Batang Regency as an intangible cultural heritage of Indonesia. In Kalipucang Wetan village, a gallery displays Batik Rifa'iyah works and motifs for visitors. In Batang Regency, the tradition serves as a medium for Islamic preaching and stems from the legacy of Syekh KH. Ahmad Rifa'i. During its creation, Javanese or Arabic Kidung lyrics are recited, containing advice about people and the environment. A three-nation batik pattern is another distinctive feature. Looking at the displayed motifs lets you learn about both the designs and the religious and cultural background of the tradition.

Another long-standing tradition in Batang city is Kliwonan, associated with the night of Friday Kliwon. It includes a night market with rides, food, plants and goods, visited by locals and people from other cities. Lomban, in turn, is an annual traditional rowing parade and rowing competition. It takes place each year in Klidang village on the ninth day of the month of Syawal, the eighth day after the Eid al-Fitr celebration. The date follows the Islamic calendar and therefore shifts each year in the Gregorian calendar. If you want to plan your trip around Lomban or Kliwonan, check the date in advance.

Individual gravesites also contribute to Batang's historical and religious diversity. The tomb of Syech Tholabuddin is in Pekuncen, in a cemetery near the Masin village office in Warungasem District. Makam Auliya Wonobodro is associated with a historic Tanah Perdikan: a territory that was exempt from taxes in recognition of its merits to a kingdom or government. The tomb complex includes, among others, the graves of Syeikh Maulana Maghribi, Syeikh Sunan Kudus, Syeikh Bandi Maktis, Syeikh Fakir Sugih, Syeikh Ki Ageng Pekalongan and Syeikh Ki Ageng Wonobodro.

Dishes as part of your trip planning

Lontong Lemprak consists of lontong and local chicken in a spiced broth. Its name refers to the custom of eating the dish while sitting cross-legged on a mat. Serabi Kalibeluk comes in two varieties: a brown version with palm sugar and a white one with granulated sugar. Kalibeluk village in Warungasem District is considered the dish's place of origin. These dishes offer another way to experience Batang: through its ingredients, preparation and the food culture reflected in their names.

Choosing the right area for your holiday rental

When looking for a holiday rental, it helps to first sort out the places you want to visit and your interests. Ujungnegoro is about 14 kilometres northeast of Batang city; the reference point about 50 kilometres to the south for Sangubanyu, by contrast, is the regency capital. Bear these different reference points in mind when planning your location. If your main interest is the bay and fishing area, Ujungnegoro is a destination in its own right; Batik, traditions, waterfalls and local dishes offer different areas of focus.
