Museums and City History
Museum Bali is an ethnographic museum that owns and exhibits cultural artifacts from prehistoric times to the present. On the second floor of the Bajra-Sandhi Monument, 33 dioramas depict the Balinese struggle from the colonial period to independence; the accompanying texts are in Balinese, Indonesian and English. The Catur-Muka Statue, made of granite, was created in 1973 by the artist I Gusti Nyoman Lempad from Ubud. It is nine metres high and faces west, east, north and south. The Gajah Mada heritage area extends from the western end of Jalan Thamrin to the Catur-Muka Statue in the east. The dioramas and the statue are at different locations. A museum pass or combined tour is not documented.
Markets, Temples and Festivals
Badung Market and Kumbasari Art Market are located in the old town area of Gajah Mada. Tukad Badung separates the two markets; both are described as tourist destinations. Non-Hindu visitors may enter Pura Agung Jagatnatha if they wear appropriate clothing, including a sarong and a sash tied around the waist. The Denpasar Festival features art, culinary offerings and a multicultural festival programme and lasts one week at the end of each year. Pesta Kesenian Bali takes place annually at Taman Budaya Denpasar for one month from June to July. Artists from Bali’s nine regencies and cities present traditional arts such as dance, music, sculpture, painting, Wayang and traditional foods. The stated dress rule applies at Pura Agung Jagatnatha; the festival information does not confirm a specific future daily programme.
