Buleleng: Culture, History and Coast
Accommodation in Buleleng
Buleleng offers a range of ways to shape your stay: you can explore Balinese writing culture and the history of the Kingdom of Buleleng, or make the beach and water your focus. The places and themes each have their own appeal—from collections and historic buildings to calm waters, local food and dolphins. You can start by deciding which experiences you want to define your trip.
Culture through collections, writing and history
Buleleng Museum was established on 30 March 2002. Its archaeological collections include sarcophagi, statues and weapons. The museum also showcases art and objects relating to life in North Bali, including paintings and textiles, gold and silver crafts, and tools used in agriculture and fishing. These diverse objects give the museum a broad thematic scope—from handicrafts to tools from two areas of daily life.
Gedong Kirtya offers a different focus: it is a specialist library for classical Balinese, Old Javanese and Sasak literature written on lontar leaves. The focus, then, is not a general book collection, but literature preserved in a specific writing tradition. Gedong Kirtya is accessible by public transport. Those with a particular interest in writing culture will find a dedicated point of interest here alongside the museum’s collections.
Songket Beratan also has a specific cultural connection: this distinctive songket fabric comes from Desa Beratan, Kecamatan Buleleng, Singaraja. The history of the Kingdom of Buleleng is also reflected in a range of places and buildings. Puri Kanginan is a historic remnant; it served as the residence of a noble family and, in its historical period, also as a government centre. Puri Agung Singaraja, also known as Puri Gede Buleleng, is part of the tourist palace offering and is located on Jalan Mayor Metra in Singaraja.
Another point of interest in Singaraja is Tugu Singa Ambara Raja, a historical and cultural attraction in Kelurahan Paket Agung, Kecamatan Buleleng. As a city landmark, the Tugu is often used by visitors as a photo spot. Eks Pelabuhan Buleleng, by contrast, has its former function right in its name: the former harbour area is now an urban tourism district and a popular place to spend time in Singaraja. These examples offer different ways to connect with local history, each with its own story to tell.
Beach destinations and experiences on the water
Pantai Penimbangan is a tourist destination on Jalan Pura Segara Penimbangan in Desa Baktiseraga, Kecamatan Buleleng. The beach is used for recreation, particularly by young people from the surrounding area. Food is also part of what characterises the place: the beach stalls serve local dishes such as ketupat and blayag, along with grilled corn, toast and drinks. This makes it easy to pair a beach visit with regional food.
Lovina offers a different perspective on the coast. This tourist beach area is known for its calm waters, dark sand with white grains, coral and tropical fish. The calm water is suitable for swimming, snorkelling and fishing, as well as boat trips in traditional boats. Lovina is also a natural habitat for dolphins, which can be spotted there in the morning. Here, the beach and water are not only places to relax, but also settings for a range of activities and wildlife watching.
Choose the right focus for your holiday rental
As you look for a holiday rental, consider which of these themes you want to shape your stay: writing culture and historic sites, an urban setting, or the beach and activities on the water. If you have several interests, you can take them into account when choosing your preferred location. This way, planning starts with a specific question about the experience you want from your trip, rather than with a type of accommodation that may not suit every stay equally well.
