Ramgarh: Temples, Valleys and History
Accommodation in Ramgarh
Ramgarh brings together very different reasons to travel: temples on a hill, valleys rich in greenery, and places of religious and historical remembrance. When choosing a holiday rental, the first question may therefore be what you want to shape your stay: landscapes, religious sites or history. The destinations offer a range of themes for your trip, from visiting a temple and enjoying distinctive natural scenery to exploring historic sites.
Hilly Landscapes and Green Valleys
Patratu Valley is surrounded by hills, lakes and lush greenery. This combination gives the valley a scenic character that differs from Ramgarh’s religious and historical themes. If you mainly want to experience the landscape, you can make Patratu Valley a focus of your trip and choose your accommodation based on the interests that will shape your stay as a whole.
Chhuttupalu Valley is characterised by lush greenery. It is located in Ramgarh on NH 33 and is also known as Lalki Ghati; a visit offers the opportunity to enjoy the scenery.
Temples and Religious Sites
Mahamaya Temple stands on Tungri Hill at an altitude of approximately 1,100 feet. Well-laid steps lead to the temple complex and to the summit of the 1,100-foot hill. The temple is estimated to be 250 to 300 years old.
Tutti Jharna, a temple with a distinctive religious image, is also located in Ramgarh, Jharkhand: at Tuti Jharna, water flows from the palms of both hands of a white statue of Mother Ganga onto the Shiva Linga. At Tutti Jharna, the Jalabhishek of Bholenath is performed around the clock throughout the year with Ganga water. For those interested in religious sites, this is a distinct reason to visit alongside Mahamaya Temple.
Chaitanya Mahaprabhu Kamal Pad is a famous religious site in Ramgarh, Jharkhand, located in Ramgarh Cantonment. The footprints or footmarks of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu can still be seen there. At the Chinnamastika Mandir site in Rajrappa, a natural hot spring attracts visitors, particularly in winter, and is a popular picnic spot. Dharamshalas, rest houses and guesthouses are available at this site for pilgrims and tourists.
Historic Sites and Remembrance
Jama Masjid in the town of Ramgarh Cantonment in Ramgarh district was built by the Mughal rulers in the late 16th century. Another historic site is the ancient Kaitha Shiva Temple, three kilometres from Ramgarh. It is designated as a national historic site and was recently declared a monument of national importance by the central government. Its architecture combines Bengali, Rajput and Mughal styles.
Chhuttupalu Valley is also linked to a specific historical event: Sheikh Bhikhari and Thakur Vishwanath Shahdeo, locally also known as Upraon Singh, were hanged there on 8 January 1856. Alongside Jama Masjid and Kaitha Shiva Temple, visitors to Ramgarh for its history will also find a place associated with an event that has a precise date. Landscape and historical remembrance meet here under the same valley name, without forming a single sightseeing route.
Choose your focus based on whether you would like to prioritise temples and religious sites, historic architecture and remembrance, or green valleys. For additional information at the town level, visit Ramgarh.
