In Chatra, travel experiences range from waterfalls and dark mixed forests to temples, a cave and the ruins of an old palace. The routes to the waterfalls also vary: some sections can be covered by vehicle, while others include a walk. For your travel planning, it is therefore worth choosing your destinations based on their specific features.

Waterfalls and Routes with Different Stages

At Bario Waterfall, the journey involves 10 km by vehicle, followed by a 2 km walk. The road is an unpaved Kacha road. At the waterfall, the falling water hits rock walls and forms white plumes—a striking contrast with the open cascade described at Maludah Waterfall.

The route to Dumer Sumer also involves 10 km by vehicle, followed by a 2 km walk; the road is likewise an unpaved Kacha road. There, the falling water of a waterfall meets rock walls. Bario and Dumer Sumer therefore each offer a waterfall setting where the water meets rock, while the access details for both consist of a vehicle journey and a walking section.

At Maludah Waterfall, 5 km can be covered by vehicle; the remaining 3 km must be walked. The waterfall drops about 50 feet without touching the sides of the hills. Its approximate height and distinctive cascade make it a unique sight among the district’s waterfalls.

Goa Waterfall can be reached by jeep for 4.5 km, followed by a 1.5 km walk. The journey to Khaywa Banaroo Waterfall consists of 8 km on a paved road, 2 km on a road that is passable in good weather, and then 2 km on foot. If you are planning a family trip, you can consider the details for each waterfall individually rather than treating the routes as similar excursions.

Forest Landscapes and Wildlife

Tamasin is located in the Gautam Buddha Wildlife Sanctuary in Chatra district. Its mixed forests consist of tall trees that make the area seem dark even in daylight. Notable attractions in the sanctuary include the four-horned antelope, the muntjac and the axis deer. This combination of forest landscapes and the animal species mentioned gives the nature experience there a different focus from the waterfall destinations.

Lawalong Wildlife Sanctuary lies in the northwestern part of Chatra district and is one of the major wildlife reserves of the Chhotanagpur Plateau. If you are particularly interested in protected areas and wildlife, you can include this natural area alongside Tamasin when choosing your destinations.

Temples, a Cave and Historical Traces

The Bhadrakali Temple complex in Itkhori brings together Hindu, Jain and Buddhist deities. Ancient temples stand on Kauleshwari Hill, including the Kali temple of Kauleshwari Devi. The hill is 1,575 feet high, and its summit offers excellent views. Temple visits and the view from the summit are therefore different reasons to include this place in your travel plans.

Kunda Cave has a very narrow entrance, a central hall and a Shivling in one of its alcoves. These features distinguish the cave from the temple complexes and open viewpoints. At Kunda Fort, the walls of the ruins of an old palace are still standing, although they are badly deteriorated—another way to explore Chatra’s historical traces.
