In Jalpaiguri district, dense forests, tea plantations and river landscapes shape the scenery. There are also natural areas offering a range of experiences and temple traditions that continue to this day. A large northern part of the area is associated with the Dooars; the name is explained as meaning “gateway to Bhutan”. When choosing a holiday rental, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: wilderness and safaris, birds and river landscapes, or culture and religious festivals.

Forests, wildlife and birdwatching

Gorumara National Park is located in the Dooars region of the district. Its landscape consists of dense forests and grasslands on the flat plains of the Murti and Raidak river systems. The park is home to Indian rhinoceroses and offers jeep and elephant safaris with knowledgeable guides. Those interested in forest landscapes and wildlife will find a clear nature focus here.

Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary, one of the oldest wildlife sanctuaries in West Bengal, offers a different perspective. The Murti River separates it from Gorumara National Park. Chapramari’s forest landscape offers opportunities for fishing and boating; from the watchtower, you can observe resident and migratory birds. The nature experiences described here therefore differ: Gorumara focuses on safaris and landscapes of forest and grassland, while Chapramari also offers watchtower birdwatching and activities on the water.

At Gajoldoba, migratory waterbirds gather at the dam on the Teesta River. The reservoir is surrounded by the dense forests of Baikunthapur. Gajoldoba lies between the Mahananda River to the west and the Teesta River to the east. Tea plantations stretch across the district; extensive areas of dense green forest also characterize Jalpaiguri. These different landscapes can help you narrow down the kind of trip you are looking for.

Temples and living traditions

Jalpesh Temple near Mainaguri is an ancient Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. The present structure reflects traditional Bengali temple architecture; for centuries, the site has been regarded as an important center of Shaivite worship. The Shravani Mela and celebrations for Mahashivaratri take place there every year. If culture and religious traditions are your priority, you can consider these festivals as a reason for your trip.

Manasa Puja at the historic Jalpaiguri Rajbari is also part of the district’s cultural character. It has been celebrated for more than five centuries and is associated with traditional Bishahari songs. During the puja, a five-day fair fills the grounds of Jalpaiguri Rajbari. Temple architecture, worship and festival traditions therefore offer different cultural points of interest, distinct from the nature experiences of the forests and rivers.
