Uttarkashi offers different perspectives on the Garhwal Himalayas: pilgrimage sites, high-altitude landscapes and trekking routes shape the district. When planning your trip, it is worth paying attention to the specific starting points and altitudes. They differ significantly, as do the experiences offered by temples, mountain courses and trails.

High-altitude destinations and landscapes

Yamunotri is located in Uttarkashi district in the Garhwal Himalayas at an altitude of 3,293 metres. Gangotri is also an important point of reference for the region: the village lies at 3,140 metres, and the Gangotri Temple stands on the right bank of the Bhagirathi. Gangotri is one of the four destinations on the Char Dham pilgrimage in Uttarakhand. Gomukh, the source of the Bhagirathi in the Gangotri Glacier, lies in the district at an altitude of 13,200 feet (4,023 metres).

In the Harsil Valley, at 2,660 metres, streams freeze in winter; a thick blanket of snow then conceals the road. This is a striking seasonal feature of the area. The Nehru Institute of Mountaineering also holds a skiing course every year in January and February, depending on snow conditions. If you are considering visiting Uttarkashi in winter, keep these details about the valley and the course in mind separately: the course is explicitly dependent on snow conditions.

Temples, pilgrimage sites and traditions

The Vishwanath Temple is an ancient holy shrine where Shiva is worshipped throughout the day. The courtyard contains the Shakti Temple, from which a massive brass trident rises. Those interested in temples and religious traditions will find specific places and details here rather than an abstract description of the pilgrimage region. In Gangotri, the location on the Bhagirathi, the temple in the village and the place’s importance within the Char Dham pilgrimage come together.

Festivals and historic routes are also part of the region’s cultural character. The Magh Mela is held every year in January in Uttarkashi to mark Makar Sankranti. The Anduri Utsav, also called the Butter Festival, is an annual event in Raithal in Uttarkashi district. Gartang Gali was a wooden bridge on the trade route between India and Tibet. These examples represent different ways of experiencing the region: religious sites, recurring events and a historic link along a trade route.

Trekking and mountain courses

Trekking destinations differ in their starting points and route lengths. The route to Gomukh runs 19 km from Gangotri. For Dodital, the trekking route begins after a 19 km jeep ride from Uttarkashi to Sangamchatti; from there, it continues for another 24 km. The route across Kalindi Pass is 110 km long and runs from Gangotri to Badrinath. So if you are looking for a holiday apartment in Uttarkashi, it helps to first decide which of these different routes will be the focus of your trip—without treating their respective starting points as the same.

The Nehru Institute of Mountaineering offers various types of courses: the Basic Mountaineering Course introduces women and men to mountaineering. The Adventure Course is aimed at school students and adults; the programme includes trekking, rock climbing, camping, cooking and navigation, as well as learning about flora, fauna and their protection. Another focus is the Mountain-Terrain-Biking Course on Uttarkashi’s challenging trails. These courses differ in content and target audience, and give you a reason to identify your interests specifically when planning your trip.

Getting around and overnight stays on the way

Frequent bus services and shared taxis run from Dehradun bus station to Uttarkashi. The nearest railway station and the nearest airport to Uttarkashi are also in Dehradun; the airport is Jolly Grant Airport Dehradun. Dodital itself is also relevant when planning a trek: you can book an overnight stay at the forest rest house with a permit from the Forest Department in Uttarkashi, or visitors can camp in tents. Nelong Valley is an Inner Line area on the border between India and China and is open to tourists only during the day.
