Bageshwar: Temples, Festivals and Routes to the Pindari Glacier
Accommodation in Bageshwar
Bageshwar combines a vibrant festival tradition with temples, landscapes and a connection to treks to the Pindari Glacier. The town serves as a shared base for these treks, which lead to the road’s starting point in Loharkhet. The Pindari Glacier is 3 km long and 250 m wide. Bageshwar therefore brings together a range of travel interests: you may be interested in culture and religious festivals, or consider the town as a starting point for a trek.
Festivals and local traditions
Bageshwar’s Uttaraini Festival takes place in January over a period of one week. The goods on offer include ponies, goats and sheep, as well as furs, yak tails, musk glands, borax and salt horns. Books, shoes, and fresh and dried fruit are also available. This unusual variety makes the festival a subject in its own right when planning a trip: those interested in local goods and traditions can take the January dates into account, while other travel plans may focus more on the temples or the trek to the Pindari Glacier.
Religious festivals are also associated with particular places. During the annual Shivratri festival, Bagnath Temple welcomes large numbers of visitors. At Sriharu Temple, about 5 km from Bageshwar, a large fair is held every year on Vijay Dashmi after the Navratras. At Chandika Temple, about 1 km from the town, many devotees gather every year during the Navaratras. These dates and places offer different ways to explore Bageshwar from a cultural perspective.
Temples and special places
Bagnath Temple stands in Bageshwar at the confluence of the Saryu and Gomti rivers. In Baijnath, 26 km from Bageshwar, the Baijnath Temple complex is located on the banks of the Gomti. It comprises a main shrine dedicated to Shiva and 17 subsidiary shrines in the Nagara architectural style. An ancient stone idol of the Hindu goddess Parvati is also located in Baijnath. The temple complex and the idol give visitors interested in culture different insights into the religious sites in the surrounding area.
Another special place is Gauri Udiyar, 8 km from Bageshwar. The cave temple houses a collection of Shiva idols. The different destinations can be distinguished by theme: Bagnath Temple is defined by its location at the confluence, Baijnath is known for its temple complex and Parvati idol, and Gauri Udiyar combines a cave temple with Shiva idols.
Discover Kausani and Kanda
In Kausani, a moderate 5 km trek leads to the village of Pinnath. It ends at a small temple dedicated to Lord Bhairon. Those interested in observing nature can view planets and other celestial phenomena at the Starscapes Observatory in Kausani. Visitors can drive to the Kausani Tea Estate along Bageshwar Road. These different experiences appeal to different interests: a trek ending at a temple, views of celestial phenomena, or a visit to the Tea Estate.
Kausani is also home to Anasakti Ashram, which is associated with Mahatma Gandhi’s visit in 1929. This stay is said to have inspired his writings on Anasakti Yoga. The Sumitra Nandan Pant Museum displays manuscripts, drafts of poems and personal belongings of the poet Sumitra Nandan Pant. Thus, in Kausani, a historically significant ashram stands alongside insights into a poet’s life and work.
Kanda offers another aspect of the landscape and local life: the village lies at an altitude of 1,500 to 1,900 metres and is surrounded by mountains and terraced fields. Near Kanda, you can explore the surroundings of Sonargaon village on foot and observe the daily life of the local community. In Kanda, visitors can also observe and take part in local arts and crafts, including dried-flower decoration and Alpana and Rangoli designs.
Getting there and choosing where to stay
