Jaunpur combines impressive architectural history with religious traditions and handicraft culture. Mosques, a fort on the Gomti and a historic bridge offer tangible starting points for a journey of discovery. Nearby places and further perspectives on the landscape round out the picture. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can base your choice on which of these themes you want to shape your stay.

Mosques and Architectural History on the Gomti

Construction of the Atala Masjid began in 1393 under Feroze Shah, and it was built in 1408 by Ibrahim Shah Sharki. The structure is more than 100 feet high and has three large entrance gates. Its architectural significance extends beyond the building itself: the Atala Masjid was considered a model for the construction of other mosques in Jaunpur.

The Jhanjhari Masjid is in the Sipah district on the north bank of the Gomti. A central arch, 35 feet high and 32 feet wide, is all that remains. The riverfront location also matters at Shahi Qila: the fort lies in central Jaunpur on the left bank of the Gomti, offering views of the river and the city. Shahi Qila also contains a Turkish-style bath. Only the eastern gate and a few interior arches remain; check the condition before visiting.

The Shahi Pul adds a Mughal-era structure to this picture. It was built in 1564 by Munyeen Khankhana on Akbar’s orders during his reign. Its roadway is at ground level, and the bridge spans rest on octagonal pillars. A large lion sculpture stands on a square platform in the middle, with an elephant lying beneath its front paws.

Other Mosques in the Surrounding Area

Near Jaunpur, the Jama Masjid is on Shahganj Road, close to Purani Bazar. This significant Sharki-era structure is more than 200 feet high. Its interior measures 219 × 217 feet, and there is a gate in each of the four cardinal directions. Curved arches, Egyptian-style engravings, lotus, sunflower and rose motifs, and window grilles define its architecture. Twenty-seven steps lead to the upper level. For reference, the Jama Masjid is about 1.5 km from Jaunpur Junction railway station.

Another trace of history leads to Begumganj, one mile north of the city. There, the Masjid Lal Darwaja was built in 1455 by V. V. Raje, the wife of Sultan Mahamud Shah Sharki. Its architecture includes three gates and a courtyard. Inscriptions on two pillars are written in Sanskrit and Pali; among them are a Samvat year and the names of some kings of Kannauj.

Religious Traditions, Handicrafts and Scenery

Near Jaunpur, the old Sheetala Maata Chaukiya Temple is associated with the worship of Shiva and Shakti. Many devotees visit on Mondays and Fridays, and large crowds gather during Navratri. These recurring religious practices provide a different focus from the architectural history of the mosques.

Handicrafts are also part of Jaunpur’s appeal: skilled artisans weave woollen carpets and durries on traditional handlooms using wool, cotton and blended yarns. Gujartal offers a natural contrast, with its largely unspoiled surroundings. It is two miles west of Kheta Sarai. Van Vihar, on T.-D.-College-Kuddupur Road, also attracts tourists.

Getting There and Choosing Accommodation

Jaunpur City is one of two railway stations in Jaunpur. The bus station has good connections to Varanasi, Lucknow, Gorakhpur and Allahabad. Local transport is available to the Atala Masjid, about 3 km from the bus station. The Jhanjhari Masjid is within a 3 km radius of the bus station; auto-rickshaws and e-rickshaws are available for getting there. Local transport is also available to the Masjid Lal Darwaja and Sheetala Maata Chaukiya Temple, each about 5 km from the bus station.

When choosing a holiday apartment, it helps to first decide which places you want to visit and what you want to focus on. The distances from the railway and bus stations offer an initial guide, while the historical and cultural themes can help you put together a trip that suits your interests. This can help you make a more targeted assessment of which starting point is right for your stay in Jaunpur.
