South Tripura offers a range of reasons to explore: protected areas with water and wildlife, parks with boat trips, a cross-border market and places of remembrance. This diversity makes the region appealing to travellers who want to include nature experiences and history in their holiday plans.

Protected areas and parks with water

In Trishna Wildlife Sanctuary, streams and bodies of water hold water all year round; there are also grasslands and areas of pristine forest with rare vegetation. Indian gaurs (bison) are one of the sanctuary’s attractions. Open spaces, forest, water and wildlife give this natural area its distinctive character.

The parks also each have their own focus. At Bardosh Eco Park, a large lake lies at the centre, where visitors can go boating. The park also features diverse flora and fauna. Boat trips are also available at Kalapania Nature Park. There, a large pond at the centre divides the park into two halves. Those looking to combine a lake and a boat trip will find this combination at Bardosh; Kalapania is additionally distinguished by the way its pond divides the park.

Butterfly Eco-Park in Rajnagar is currently home to many butterfly species. This adds another nature destination to the selection: here, the focus is on the diversity of butterflies, alongside protected areas and parks with water.

Places of remembrance and religious heritage

Bharat Bangla Maitree Uddyan was established in memory of the 1971 Liberation War. It honours the victory of the Bangladeshi soldiers under Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the courage of the Indian army under then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. A statue commemorating the Liberation War was erected in the park. The site thus combines a visible monument with a specific historical connection.

In the village of Manubankul, in the northeastern part of the Sabroom subdivision, the Buddha temple is known for its ancient Buddhist monastery. Dhananjoy Tripura Smriti Eco-Park contains a monument to Dhananjay Tripura. These places offer different points of interest from the nature parks: the focus here is on religious tradition and remembrance.

A market on the border

Border Haat lies directly on the zero line between India and Bangladesh. Residents of the adjacent areas in both countries can buy goods there from sellers from both countries. Products on offer include spices, tea leaves, vegetables, fruit, biscuits, baked goods and dried fish. The Haat is therefore a different kind of excursion from the parks: its distinctive features are its location on the border, cross-border trade and the wide range of goods. If you plan a visit, bear in mind the stated restriction on who can shop there.

Getting there and choosing accommodation

South Tripura is connected to the state capital via National Highway NH-08. This road link provides a useful reference point for planning your journey. When looking for a holiday rental, you can start by deciding whether protected areas, boat trips, the market or places of remembrance should shape your stay.
