Discover Khammam: Fort, History and Lakes
Accommodation in Khammam
Fort and City History
Khammam combines city history with archaeological traces and varied waterscapes. Khammam Fort stands on a hill in the heart of the city. The Kakatiyas built it in 950 AD; it was taken over by the Qutub Shahi rulers in 1512. These are two clearly dated milestones associated with the fort. The name Khammam also has a traditional explanation: it is said to derive from the “Narasimhadri” temple, built on a hill in the city. Anyone interested in the history of the area will find a clear focus for planning a trip here.
Archaeological Traces in Nelakondapalli
Nelakondapalli offers a different way to explore the past. The site is enclosed by an earthen fortification wall covering nearly 100 acres. Excavations uncovered the foundations of brick viharas, wells, cisterns and a Mahastupa. The early historical finds from Nelakondapalli date from the 3rd and 4th centuries AD. Together, these diverse finds and structures give the site its own archaeological character. The Sri Bhaktha Ramadasu Smaraka Mandiram is also located in Nelakondapalli Mandal and is associated with the birthplace of Sri Kancherla Gopanna, also known as Sri Bhakta Ramdas. For your choice of destination, this means Khammam is especially associated with its fort and city history, while Nelakondapalli is known for its excavation sites and the remembrance of Ramdas.
Lakes and Leisure
The lakes also differ in their surroundings and the leisure activities associated with them. Palair Lake is in Palair village in Kusumanchi Mandal, about 30 kilometres from the administrative headquarters of Khammam District. It is located on the Hyderabad–Khammam road. Water sports and other leisure facilities have been provided at the lake. Lakaram Lake has an adjoining park called Lakaram Lake View; special boats have also been provided there for boating. Wyra Reservoir lies beside the town of Wyra in Khammam District and is known for good fishing. If you are planning your holiday around water and leisure, you can distinguish these places by the features mentioned: Palair for its available facilities, Lakaram for its park and boats, or Wyra for fishing.
Forest and Nature
The Puligundala Project adds a natural area to these options. It is in the Kanakagiri Reserve Forest Block of the Tallada Range, in the Sathupally Division of Khammam District. Its water spread covers about 40 acres. The area is noted for its wide variety of flora and fauna, including migratory birds. Puligundala therefore offers a different travel focus from the city’s history or the lakes with their specified leisure facilities. If nature and wildlife are your interests, you can consider this place specifically when planning your trip, without confusing it with the other destinations.
