West Sikkim: National Park, Trekking and Monastery Culture
Accommodation in West Sikkim
West Sikkim brings together the landscape of Khangchendzonga National Park, trekking routes, monastery traditions and the market life of Gyalshing. Visitors weighing up different interests for a trip will find nature, longer trekking trails and cultural events as distinct highlights here. Gyalshing is also a practical reference point when choosing a holiday apartment, as it has road and bus connections.
National Park Between Valleys and High Mountains
Khangchendzonga National Park extends across the districts of Gyalshing and Mangan. Its landscapes include plains, valleys, lakes, glaciers, snow-covered mountains and ancient forests. The park ranges from 1,220 m to 8,586 m in elevation and covers 178,400 hectares. This wide range defines the area's natural character: its landscapes extend from plains and forests to glaciers and high, snow-covered mountains. The Dzongri-Goechala trekking trail runs through the national park.
One recommended trekking route in West Sikkim passes through Yuksom, Bkhim, Tsoka and Dzongri. It then lists Thangsing or Kokchurong, followed by Lamuni or Chaurigang, and continues to the Goechala or Rathong Glacier and back. The alternatives along the route are clearly specified. Another recommended route passes through Pemayangtse, Sangacholing, Khecheopalri, Hongri, Sinon, Tashiding and Ralong. Those making trekking the focus can consider these different route itineraries as a distinct part of their trip planning, without combining them into a single sequence.
Yuksom lies close to the travel destination. The town is considered a gateway to the Khangchendzonga Biosphere Reserve and a starting point for high-altitude trekking; the route to Dzongri is described as the most frequently used. Another nature visit begins at Hilley, the last point accessible by vehicle before the Varsey Rhododendron Sanctuary. From there, a four-kilometre trail leads through pine forests to the sanctuary.
Monastery Traditions and Festivals in Gyalshing
Gyalshing brings together religious traditions and its own festival occasions. Opposite Gyalshing Bazaar is the Mendang, also known as the Sacred Wall. It is considered the longest and holiest wall and was built by the third king, Chogyal Chador Namgyal. During Saga Dawa, a colourful procession moves through the town: monks carry musical instruments, while devotees carry holy scriptures, portraits and statues of Buddha.
During Guru Rimpoche’s Thunkar Tshechu, a statue of the Guru is carried in a procession through Gyalshing; Chaams are held at Dubdi Monastery. The Guthor Chaam is associated with a performance at Pemayangtse Monastery in Gyalshing, two days before the Tibetan New Year. The Kagyed Dance is a traditional annual dance festival held at the old monasteries of Gyalshing. It takes place on the 28th and 29th days of the tenth month of the Tibetan calendar, which corresponds to December. Drukpa Tshechi takes place in Gyalshing on the fourth day of the sixth month of the Tibetan lunar calendar. These events differ in their processions, dances and calendar dates.
Market Life and Connections
Gyalshing Bazaar, also known as Gyalshing Market, is one of the oldest markets and was established around 100 years ago. On Sundays, villagers gather there to shop or sell their own produce. Alongside its religious festivals, Gyalshing’s local life is also shaped by a regular market day.
Gyalshing is connected to the rest of Sikkim by roads that are accessible to vehicles. Transport links include SNT buses to places in Sikkim and to Siliguri, as well as private taxis that can be hired or shared. If transport connections matter when choosing a place for a holiday apartment, you can take these options in Gyalshing into account. The area's nature, trekking and monastery culture also offer different points of reference for deciding which places you would like to explore further.
