Rajsamand between temples, lake and Haldighati
Accommodation in Rajsamand
Rajsamand brings together impressive temple architecture, stories from the region’s past and a distinctive lakeside landscape. A white stone embankment on Rajsamand Lake, Haldighati’s narrow pass and the temples of Kumbhalgarh each offer a very different perspective. When planning your trip, first consider whether religious architecture, historic sites, nature or activities on the water should take centre stage. This will also help you choose a holiday apartment based on the experiences that interest you most.
Temples, architecture and religious traditions
The Dwarikadheesh Temple is built in the haveli style. Festivals are also celebrated there according to the Pushtimarg tradition: architecture and religious practice come together at this site. Another temple with a long history is Charbhuja Nath Temple, a Vishnu temple built in 1444.
Kumbhalgarh Fort is home to further religious buildings with distinct characteristics. NeelkanthMahadev Temple was built in 1458 and has a six-foot-high stone Shivling. The Golerao Jain Temples form a group of nine temples within the fort. Together with the Vishnu temple at Charbhuja Nath, they offer a multifaceted view of the region’s religious architecture, with each place telling a different story.
Living traditions are also part of the cultural picture: Gawri is a folk dance drama performed by the Bhil in various villages in September and October. A major festival at Charbhuja Temple is associated with Bhadrapad Ekadashi, also known as Jhaljhoolani Ekadashi. These different connections make religious festivals and performances a distinct focus alongside temple architecture.
Haldighati: landscape and history
Haldighati is a narrow pass that runs from south to northeast and ends in a plain. In 1576, Haldighati was the site of the battle between Maharana Pratap and the forces of Emperor Akbar. The Haldighati Museum displays artefacts from the battle and about Maharana Pratap’s history. Chetak Samadhi commemorates the place where Chetak died. The landscape, museum and memorial offer different points of interest for anyone curious about the area’s history.
Haldighati also has a seasonal side during the Chaitri rose season. Around Haldighati, local artisans make Gulkand, a rose petal preserve, and Gulab Jal, rose water. So, alongside historical themes, local products and traditional crafts are among the discoveries that travellers can associate with the area.
Rajsamand Lake and the landscape
At the southern end of Rajsamand Lake, near Kankroli, stands a white stone embankment called Nau-Chauki ki Pal. It is 183 metres long and 12 metres high—a notable landmark for anyone interested in structures and their dimensions. The lake’s history is unusual, too: during the Second World War, it served Imperial Airways as a seaplane base for about six years.
At Kumbhalgarh Fort, the contrast between architecture and nature is particularly striking: Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary surrounds the fort. Endangered species live in the sanctuary, including leopards, sloth bears, nilgai, sambar deer, chinkara and wolves. If you would like to factor wildlife and landscape into your travel plans as well as culture, this offers a very different focus from the temples or Haldighati’s historical sites.
Water-based activities may also be worth considering when planning your trip. If you would like to include banana rides, jet skiing or speedboat activities on Rajsamand Lake, check availability with the relevant provider in advance. Hot-air balloon rides in Kumbhalgarh are intended to be booked in advance; check ahead to see whether they are currently available.
Choose the right focus for your accommodation
The destinations differ mainly in what they offer: temples and religious traditions, Haldighati’s history, the sanctuary’s wildlife or Rajsamand Lake. Before choosing a base, consider which of these aspects will account for the largest part of your trip. As a guide to travel in the wider region, Maharana Pratap Airport in Dabok is about 75 kilometres from Rajsamand.
