Jhalawar combines experiences of nature and culture with unusual historical sites. In Mukundara Hills Tiger Reserve, relatively dense forest, orchids, and tuberous plants share a habitat with rare and endangered animals. At the same time, temples, rock caves, a palace museum, and a historic theater stage tell different chapters of the region’s story. When planning your trip, it is worth first deciding whether you want to focus mainly on nature, religious architecture, history, or local traditions.

Forests, Plants, and Regional Traditions

Mukundara Hills Tiger Reserve also extends into Jhalarapatan tehsil in Jhalawar district. Protected rare and endangered animal species include sloth bears, sambar deer, and panthers. The relatively dense forest is also rich in orchids and tuberous plants. Those interested in Jhalawar’s natural side will find a different focus here than in the area’s historic buildings and collections.

Orange orchards are also part of Jhalawar’s landscape. The district also has traditions of leather, marble, and textile crafts, including metal bells and patchwork. These crafts offer another cultural perspective on your trip: alongside palaces and temples, the materials and techniques of local production also take center stage.

Palaces, Museums, and Historic Buildings

Garh Palace, also known as Jhalawar Fort, was built by Maharaj Rana Madan Singh and his successors between 1838 and 1854. The Jhalawar Government Museum is located inside the palace in the city center. Founded in 1915, it houses rare paintings, manuscripts, and idols. Those interested in history and collections can thus consider the palace and museum as distinct aspects of the same site.

A special feature of Bhawani Natyashala is its stage access: built by Maharaja Bhawani Singh in 1921, the theater has an underground passage through which horses and carriages could reach the stage. Religious buildings, in turn, span a long period of history. The Shantinath Jain Temple dates to the 11th century, is dedicated to the Jain Tirthankara Shantinath, and is 92 feet tall. The Chandkheri Adinath Jain Temple near Khanpur dates to the 17th century and houses a six-foot-tall seated statue of Adinath, the first Jain Tirthankara.

The Buddhist cave complex at Kolvi in Jhalawar district dates to the 5th century. It comprises around 50 rock-cut caves with living quarters for monks, places of worship, stupas, and Buddha figures. At Dalhanpur, on the banks of the Chhapi River near an irrigation dam, temple ruins with carved pillars and torans extend for about two kilometers. Naulakha Fort was built in 1860 by King Prithvi Singh, ruler of Jhalawar.

The Gomati Sagar Lake also has historical associations: Jhala Zalim Singh had the Dwarkadheesh Temple built on its banks in 1796; the Krishna idol was installed there in 1806. Near the temple, the Herbal Garden, maintained by the Forest Department, features medicinal and herbal plants, including Varun, Laxmana, Shatavari, Stevia, and Rudraksha Sindoor.

Jhalrapatan, the Fair, and Getting There

The Chandrabhaga Fair is held every year in Jhalrapatan during the month of Kartik, in October or November. It includes traditional trading activities involving cattle and other livestock. Also in Jhalrapatan, Jhalawar Science Park has a mobile mini planetarium and a Dinotorium. Alongside the annual event, science-related attractions provide another reason to visit.

Jhalawar lies on National Highway 52 and is connected by bus to numerous cities in Rajasthan. Passenger trains run daily between Kota and Jhalawar; express train services to Jaipur and Sriganganagar are also available on certain days. When choosing your holiday apartment, you can consider how its location relates to your planned activities—for example, historic sites in Jhalawar, attractions and the fair in Jhalrapatan, or the natural area that also extends across Jhalarapatan tehsil.
