Sri Muktsar Sahib: Sikh History and Maghi
Accommodation in Sri Muktsar Sahib
Sri Muktsar Sahib is closely associated with the memory of the Chali Mukte: forty Sikhs fell on 29 December 1705 near Khidrana Lake, also known as Isharsar, fighting against a Mughal army pursuing the forces of Guru Gobind Singh. In Sikh history and the daily Ardas prayer, they are remembered as the Forty Liberated Ones. The historic Battle of Khidrana, associated with Muktsar, was fought at the Khidrana reservoir. Those interested in the history of the place will encounter a tradition that remains part of religious memory to this day.
Shrines, the Sarovar and Historic Sites
The city's main shrine is Sri Darbar Sahib. It stands on the western bank of the sacred Sarovar and was founded around 1743 by the first Sikh families who settled there. The historic battlefield of Muktsar is marked by a sacred shrine and a tank. Individual marked sites recount specific moments in the tradition: Arigitha Sahib marks the spot about 50 metres west of the Sarovar where Guru Gobind Singh had the martyrs' bodies cremated. Near the southeastern corner of the Sarovar, another site marks where the Mukte took up positions behind trees and shrubs. These had been arranged to look like tents for camouflage.
Gurdwara Tuti Gandi Sahib is also among the places of interest, with its significance rooted in Sikh history. Gurdwara Taran Taran Sahib is one of the places in Sri Muktsar Sahib and its surroundings that offer insight into Sikh tradition. At Gurudwara Rakabsar Sahib, local tradition tells of a broken stirrup: it is said that when Guru Gobind Singh mounted his horse, the broken piece gave the shrine its name. Gurudwara Rakabsar Sahib is 200 metres east of Gurudwara Tibbi Sahib and was built by Baba Baghel Singh in the 1950s.
Maghi Mela and City Life
Maghi is an important time of year. The Maghi Mela takes place every year in January, on the day after Lohri, and commemorates the courage of the 40 Muktas. The main annual celebration for Sri Darbar Sahib and other shrines in Sri Muktsar Sahib falls on Maghi, in mid-January. Many devotees come for ritual bathing in the sacred Sarovar and religious addresses. Pilgrims bathe there during the Maghi Mela. This annual event is a useful reference point when planning your trip: if you want to experience the celebration, plan your visit around Maghi, rather than any January weekend.
The city's craft tradition is also part of its character. The Muktsari Jutti is known worldwide; shops that make and sell these handmade shoes are located around a Gurdwara in the heart of the city. Angooran Wali Maseet, an old mosque, is near the railway station. Mukta Minar is one of the city's main attractions, and the complex includes an open-air theatre. Together, religious history, the handmade Muktsari Jutti and Mukta Minar with its open-air theatre represent different facets of Sri Muktsar Sahib.
Getting There and Excursions
Sri Muktsar Sahib lies on the Bathinda–Ferozpur railway line. The station is served by infrequent trains to and from larger cities across the country. The Moga–Ganga Nagar road and an extensive road network are also relevant for getting there. Connections link the city with important places within and outside Punjab, including Jammu, Shimla, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Rajasthan and Delhi. Private and state-run buses operate to various parts of the country; taxis and auto-rickshaws are available for short journeys within the city. When choosing where to stay, you can therefore first consider whether your trip will rely more on rail or road connections.
Those wishing to explore beyond the city can visit Gurdwara Guptsar Sahib in the village of Chhatteana, in Gidderbaha Tehsil, about 24 kilometres from Sri Muktsar Sahib. Sarai Naga, also known as Matte Di Sarai, is the birthplace of Sri Guru Angad Dev Ji in Muktsar district. Exploring the area therefore takes in historical and religious connections in other places as well as the city's shrines.
