Nakodar: Mughal Monuments and Religious Traditions
Accommodation in Nakodar
Nakodar combines Mughal-era structures with religious traditions and recurring fairs. The town is home to the octagonal Kos Minar; nearby are a caravanserai, a Mughal bridge and two historically connected tombs. Worshippers gather to pray at Baba Murad Shah Darbar, where Qawwals also perform. When choosing a holiday rental, this raises a practical question: should Nakodar itself or the historic sites in the surrounding area be the focus of your stay?
The Mughal era in Nakodar and the surrounding area
The Kos Minar in Nakodar is an octagonal distance milestone from the Mughal era. It is well preserved, surrounded by a fence and protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (Chandigarh Circle). Its form and function make it a tangible point of interest if you are interested in historic structures.
Dakhni Sarai is located in the village of Dakhni, about 12 kilometres from Nakodar, along an old highway. The Mughal caravanserai is said to have been built around 1640 by the Mughal nobleman Ali Mardan Khan, during the reign of Shah Jahan. The complex is well preserved. Its courtyard contains a mosque and a well—details that give the site its own architectural character in addition to its history.
The Mughal bridge is also about 12 kilometres from Nakodar, south of the village of Mahlian Kalan on the Nakodar–Kapurthala road. The Sarai and the bridge are therefore a similar approximate distance away, but in different locations: the Sarai is in the village of Dakhni, while the bridge is south of Mahlian Kalan.
There are also two tombs close to each other outside the town, in the area around Nakodar. The tomb of Mohammed Momin commemorates Ustad Muhammed Momin, also known as Ustad Muhammed Husseini or Hafizak, a tambura player. The nearby tomb of Haji Jamal commemorates a student of Ustad Muhammed Husseini. Their names thus point to a shared musical connection between the two historic sites of remembrance.
Darbar, worship and fairs
Worshippers visit Dera Baba Murad Shah to pay their respects to the saint and pray. Two fairs are celebrated each year at Baba Murad Shah Darbar; the exact dates may vary. If you plan your stay around a fair, check the event dates in advance.
Gurdas Maan and other Qawwals perform at the Darbar. Langar is also served there. As information about this offering may change, contact the Darbar before your trip to check whether it will be available during your stay.
Nakodar as a base for your stay
Nakodar is a railway junction on the Jalandhar City–Nakodar line and the Lohian Khas–Nakodar–Ludhiana line. If you are travelling by train, check current connections and timetables separately.
When choosing a holiday rental, you can consider whether you want your stay to focus on the town itself, with its Darbar and railway junction, or on the historic sites nearby. Dakhni Sarai and the Mughal bridge are each about 12 kilometres from Nakodar; their different locations can help you plan your sightseeing interests. The tombs’ location outside the town is another factor to consider. This way, your accommodation choice can reflect what you want to focus on without requiring all the destinations to be combined into a single town visit.
