Pondicherry combines insights into French-Indian architecture and Tamil culture with walks and experiences on the water. The city is also known as Puducherry. Whether you are interested in historic sites, handicrafts or boat trips, its different attractions offer concrete points of reference to help shape your trip.

Walks through different city histories

The Ashram Walk takes you through the northern part of French-influenced Puducherry. Along the way, you pass several representative buildings of French origin, including Raj Nivas and the French Institute. The Walk on French Heritage has clearly specified starting and ending points: it begins and ends at the Puducherry Tourist Information Centre. The Walk on Tamil Quarter has a different focus. It runs from Easwaran Koil to VOC School, is approximately 2 kilometres long and takes about an hour. If you include walks in your trip, these different themes can guide your choice of experiences.

Goubert Avenue offers another point of reference: its historic promenade is 1.5 kilometres long and lined with colonial buildings. The French Quarter, also known as White Town, is distinguished by a blend of French and Indian colonial architecture. These names and features offer different ways to explore the city’s history without limiting yourself to just one cultural perspective.

Water, mangroves and nature

The Chunnambar Water Sports Complex offers pedal boating, kayaking, speedboat rides and banana boat rides. This gives you several types of water activities to choose from. Nearby Paradise Beach can be reached from the Chunnambar Boat House on a short, scenic boat ride. Visitors can also watch birds and take nature walks in the area around the Boat House. These options bring together water and nature experiences as different reasons to spend time in this part of the area.

Boat trips along mangrove trails are offered in Murungapakkam, Puducherry. If you would like to consider both city history and nature when planning your trip, you can explore these experiences alongside walks and cultural visits. The order you choose will depend on your trip’s different interests.

Museums, handicrafts and historic sites

The Puducherry Museum brings together a variety of collections: it displays Roman coins, French furniture, traditional Indian textiles and Chola bronze sculptures. Its collection includes 81 intricately carved bronzes from the Chola Empire. The Bharathi Museum contains works by Bharathi, the Tamil poet and nationalist. Those who put culture at the centre of their trip will find a range of subjects, from historic objects to literature.

At Puducherry Art & Craft Village, local artisans display works in terracotta, wood, painting, ceramics, textiles, paper and glass. The Sri Aurobindo Handmade Paper Factory also offers a special insight into local craftsmanship: handmade paper has been produced there in many colours since 1958. The range of materials offers concrete points of interest if you are interested in crafted objects and artisanal techniques.

Aayi Mandapam is a monument built by the French in honour of an Indian temple dancer who lived in Puducherry 300 years before the French arrived. The French War Memorial in the city centre commemorates soldiers who fell in the First World War. Annual memorial ceremonies are held there on 14 July for Bastille Day and on 11 November for Armistice Day.

Arikamedu also illustrates the trade and cultural exchange between ancient India and Rome. The site is a protected monument under the authority of the Archaeological Survey of India; excavations there uncovered workshops and kilns for terracotta. Another notable site is the Arulmigu Manakula Vinayagar Devasthanam temple, with its richly decorated gopuram and colourful patterns. The Vinayaka Chaturthi festival is held there annually. Bharatanatyam is also one of Puducherry’s defining art forms; the dance originated in Tamil Nadu.

Weighing up travel interests and a holiday rental

Puducherry offers, among other options, continental, Italian and Chinese cuisine. When choosing a holiday rental, you can first consider which themes will be decisive for your trip: walks and architecture, museums and handicrafts, water activities or the variety of cuisine. Pondicherry is connected to the rest of India by an extensive network of national highways, a railway terminal and a domestic airport.

If you would like to explore other destinations, you can also find Villianur and Karaikal here.
