Kalahandi brings together impressive waterfalls, wildlife habitats and diverse traces of regional history. It is also home to lively festival traditions and distinctive landscapes: in Haladigundi, the valley appears yellow in the morning and evening as sunlight reflects across it. You can therefore start by choosing the focus you want for your trip—nature and landscapes, or culture and history—and find a holiday rental to suit.

Waterfalls, Mountains and Wildlife

The waterfalls vary in height and location. Dokaridhara Waterfall plunges 200 feet. Phurlijharan, by contrast, is about 30 feet high and flows year-round. It is located in Karlapat Wildlife Sanctuary and is one of the area’s main tourist attractions. Khandual Waterfall is also near Karlapat, at the foot of a hill.

The natural landscape of Kalahandi also includes the Ampani Hills, which offer panoramic views of the surrounding nature. Haladigundi Valley takes on its yellow appearance in the morning and evening as sunlight reflects across it. In the Ampani area, axis deer, sambar deer and black panthers can be seen at Behera Reservoir. Karlapat Wildlife Sanctuary is home to leopards, elephants, sambar deer, nilgai, muntjac, barking deer and sloth bears. Rare bird species found there include the green avadavat, Malabar trogon and great eared nightjar.

Another nature-focused destination is Rabandhara, an ecotourism site about 10 km from Bhawanipatna, the district headquarters of Kalahandi. The Rabandhara Waterfall in Bhatangpadar is 4 km away. Rabandhara offers views of tropical deciduous forests, as well as opportunities for short hikes and nature trails. If you are especially interested in landscapes and outdoor activities, you can make these a focus of your trip.

History, Festivals and Regional Traditions

The cultural sites also tell different stories. Belkhandi lies at the confluence of the Tel and Uttei, two tributaries of the Mahanadi. Archaeological remains include ruins of 12th-century monuments and sculptures of the Sapta Matruka and Uma Maheswar. The ruins from Belkhandi are kept in a small museum beside the temple grounds.

Junagarh, the former capital of the princely state of Kalahandi, has a fortified area with temples bearing Oriya inscriptions. The ruins of Asurgarh Fort lie between an oval pond covering almost 200 acres and the Sandul River. In Karlapat, a temple is dedicated to the goddess Manikeswari. On the banks of the Kali Ganga in Mohangiri stands a dilapidated Shiva temple, whose walls and pillars bear epigraphic records.

Gudahandi Cave offers another glimpse into the past: its stone walls feature prehistoric writing, pictographic inscriptions and drawings. Kalahandi’s cultural traditions also include its woodcraft, which combines folk and classical forms, and the Ghumura dance. It is performed throughout the district during Nuakhai, Dushara and other festive occasions.

A special destination is Dokarichanchara in Kokasara village, on the border between Kalahandi and Nabarangpur district. Junagada is the nearest railway station to Dokarichanchara. A nine-day festival is held every year at the old Ram Temple during Sri Ram Navami. Suanga, a form of folk theatre, is also part of the festival culture. It is performed especially in the evenings during Dushara, weddings, birthdays and other festive occasions in Junagarh, Jaipatna, Dharamgarh and Kesinga. Performances last six to eight hours.

When choosing a holiday rental, the kind of trip you want can help guide your decision: would you like to focus on nature trails and forest landscapes, or are you especially interested in archaeological remains, temples and regional festival traditions? You can also include Dharmagarh as another stop in your travel plans.

More destinations to explore: Ganjam, Sundargarh, Puri, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Gajapati and Khordha.
