Khonoma combines views of rice fields and forested hills with themes of culture and conservation. The village is considered one of the oldest Angami villages and lies 20 km west of Kohima. A helpful question to consider when planning your trip is: should landscapes and nature observation take centre stage, or are you mainly interested in cultural heritage and environmental education?

Landscape, Species Conservation and Nature Observation

Views of rice fields and forested hills reveal two sides of the landscape: cultivated areas and wooded heights sit side by side. If you like to combine landscapes and nature-related themes when choosing a destination, this contrast is a useful guide.

The endangered Blyth’s Tragopan is protected in the Khonoma Nature Conservation and Tragopan Sanctuary. This gives species conservation a concrete connection to the area. A government report from 2021 described birdwatching and butterfly watching in Khonoma as activities that were gaining importance. Two nature-related themes therefore sit side by side: the protection of an endangered species and interest in birds and butterflies. If you are planning a trip with children, you can use this to discuss the difference between species conservation and observation as two perspectives on nature.

Nature and Culture Themes at the Morung Experience Centre

The planned focus of the Morung Experience Centre is also shaped by the connection between nature and culture. It was inaugurated on 29 November 2025 in Khonoma as part of the Forest & Biodiversity Management in the Himalaya (Nagaland) Project; the project was funded by German development cooperation through KfW Development Bank.

Designed as a place for biodiversity education, conservation learning and ecotourism, the centre aims to introduce visitors from Nagaland, India and abroad to Khonoma’s cultural and natural heritage. Its planned role also includes sharing knowledge about Khonoma’s cultural values and ecological significance, as well as contributing to environmental awareness and the preservation of traditional knowledge systems. Unlike a landscape scene, the focus here is on the planned sharing of knowledge.

Rice Diversity and Local Agriculture

Agriculture also provides a concrete point of interest. Twenty-four rice varieties are grown in Khonoma. This means the rice fields can be understood not only as a view, but also as part of local cultivation. For travellers interested in regional ways of life, this diversity complements the perspectives on landscape and conservation with an agricultural theme.

Choosing the Right Travel Focus

To decide whether Khonoma is right for your trip, you can weigh its different highlights: landscapes and nature observation sit alongside species conservation, while cultural and environmental education and rice cultivation offer further perspectives. If you are looking for a holiday rental, asking yourself which of these themes you want to shape your stay can help you choose a destination.
