Cherrapunji, also called Sohra, brings together living root bridges, waterfalls and cave exploration. The area around Sohra is considered to be surrounded by lush landscapes and impressive waterfalls. Above ground, a variety of waterfall formations shape the scenery; below ground, narrow passages, low ceilings and dimly lit chambers do. These contrasts can help you organise excursions around your interests and choose a holiday rental in Cherrapunji based on the experiences you have planned.

Root Bridges and Waterfalls

Sohra (Cherrapunji) has several living root bridges. These include single-span and double-decker bridges that are 30 to 50 metres long. Their different forms offer a concrete comparison: you can appreciate single arches and double-decker construction as distinct features, rather than treating all the bridges as a single experience. For travellers who notice distinctive forms in the landscape, this is a focus in its own right, alongside the waterfalls.

The segmented Nohsngithiang, also called Seven Sisters Falls, is said to symbolise the unity and diversity of the seven states of Northeast India. Nearby Nohkalikai Falls offers a different impression: it plunges 340 metres into an emerald-green pool. These two waterfalls let you compare different forms of water in the landscape. The symbolic interpretation of Nohsngithiang adds another dimension to the landscape.

Caves and Guided Experiences

Mawmluh Cave in Cherrapunji (Sohra) offers narrow passages, low ceilings and natural rock formations for cave exploration. November to February is recommended for a visit, because of the cool, dry weather and safer conditions for cave exploration. Nearby Mawsmai Cave offers a different experience: its chambers are cool and dimly lit, and in some places visitors have to squeeze through and crawl. Check the current access conditions before visiting Mawsmai Cave.

Cave trekking and ziplining are offered near Mawkdok. Guided tours are available in Saitsohpen, Sohra, through Kerlang Khonglam or the Meghalaya Tourists Guide Agency. These are different options for planning your excursions: the caves offer a glimpse of confined spaces and natural rock formations, while Mawkdok offers a choice of two different activities. The availability of guided tours may change; check locally before your trip.

Getting There and Choosing Accommodation

Sohra is accessible from Shillong via SH-5. The drive from Sohra to nearby Nohsngithiang Falls takes about 20 minutes; road and traffic conditions may affect the journey time. Treat this as an approximate estimate when planning. Mawmluh Cave is accessible by car via the Shillong-Sohra Road.

If you are looking for a holiday rental in Cherrapunji, first decide which experiences you want to shape your stay: waterfalls and root bridges, or caves and the activities offered at Mawkdok. Then check how the accommodation’s location fits the journeys you actually plan to make. This way, you can base your choice on your own excursion plans.
