Between Sandy Beaches and Mountain Forests

In Sindhudurg, you can explore coastal landscapes, a marine sanctuary and the mountain nature around Amboli. Each offers a different focus: at Tarkarli Beach, the Karli River meets the Arabian Sea, while Amboli is known for its forest, rich in biodiversity, and its waterfalls. Sawantwadi Palace is also one of the district’s major tourist attractions. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth first considering whether beaches, nature or culture should shape your stay.

Marine Conservation and Coastal Towns

Established in 1987, Malvan Marine Sanctuary covers 27 square kilometres and is Maharashtra’s only marine sanctuary. It protects coral reefs, pearl oysters, seagrass, molluscs and numerous fish species. The area is also considered suitable for diving among the corals. This makes the underwater experience a central feature here, clearly distinct from a beach visit. If you are particularly interested in the sea and its habitats, you can weigh these two sides of the coast against each other when deciding what you want from your trip.

Tarkarli Beach is a long sandy beach on the outskirts of Malvan, where the Karli River meets the Arabian Sea. Houseboats operate in the Karli’s backwaters there. The beach and river landscape are among the defining features of this stretch of coast. Devbag Beach, near the town of Malvan, has clear water and golden sand. Golden sand and clear water also characterise Bhogave Beach, along with the surrounding greenery and fishing villages. Beachcombing is one activity you can enjoy there.

Devgad Beach also offers a useful point of reference: it is a picnic spot in the town of Devgad, about 1 km from Devgad Bus Station. Together with Tarkarli, Devbag and Bhogave, Devgad shows that the district’s coastline includes several different beach destinations. When looking for a holiday rental, you can focus on whichever of these coastal landscapes interests you most.

Waterfalls and Culture

Amboli is a hill station in Sindhudurg district. Amboli Waterfall is a tourist attraction there, and waterfalls are among Amboli’s main attractions. Visitors often hike to the waterfall to experience the natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere of the surrounding landscape. Amboli Forest is distinguished by its rich biodiversity.

Sawantwadi Palace, one of the district’s major tourist attractions, offers a cultural addition. It was built by Khem Sawant Bhonsle, who ruled the region from 1755 to 1803. This historical connection gives the palace its own significance alongside the natural and coastal experiences. Sawantwadi Palace can be reached by road from Mumbai, Kolhapur and Pune.

Getting There and Nearby Places

The Konkan Railway stops at Kankavli, Sindhudurg, Kudal and Sawantwadi. These stations are useful reference points if you are travelling by train; the road connections mentioned above are also relevant for Sawantwadi Palace.

For further reference, you can also explore these places: Kolamb, Amboli, Kankavali, Kudal, Mahan, Ajgaon, Namas, Sawantwadi, Devbag and Naringre.
